Even when they've made millions of dollars, it's totally a thing for major league players to try and hit that mark. It's like a badge of honor or something. Garver is at just over 8 years service time, and so probably he'll keep going for at least two more seasons, if he can, which shouldn't be a problem since the bar for backup catchers is so low.
But beyond getting the service time and the fully vested pension, I think these guys like to stick around for the simple reason that this is what they do. Baseball is literally all they know. They've worked at it since they were kids and now they have this small window in their lives to play at the very highest level. You and I may look at these average or lesser players and think "meh", but this is the major leagues and everybody at this level is an elite player. And once this chapter is over, what's next? What do you do?

Arizona has re-signed veteran catcher James McCann to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with an additional $500,000 in performance incentives.
FanGraphs projects McCann with a 2026 WAR of 0.5 in 53 games while projecting Mitch Garver, who is seven months younger, with a 2026 WAR of 0.6 in 57 games.
That close comp supports the Locked On Mariners' proposed one-year, $3 million contract for Garver (unless Luis Torrens or Jonah Heim is non-tendered).

Ford is projected to put up 1 WAR making minimum was so why in the hell would we sign Garver???harmony wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:01 pmArizona has re-signed veteran catcher James McCann to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with $500,000 in performance incentives.

Perhaps because Harry Ford has far more value as a trade piece.D-train wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:07 pmFord is projected to put up 1 WAR making minimum was so why in the hell would we sign Garver???harmony wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:01 pmArizona has re-signed veteran catcher James McCann to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with $500,000 in performance incentives.

If Ford returns, the Mariners will have their backup catcher.

In their offseason plan, they have Harry Ford going to the Nationals for Mackenzie Gore, which opens up the backup catcher role.D-train wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:07 pmFord is projected to put up 1 WAR making minimum was so why in the hell would we sign Garver???harmony wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:01 pmArizona has re-signed veteran catcher James McCann to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with $500,000 in performance incentives.

It's worth noting that that this year the Washington Nationals finished last in fWAR from the catcher position (but for the Angels, a distant, distant last):GL_Storm wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:24 pmIn their offseason plan, they have Harry Ford going to the Nationals for Mackenzie Gore, which opens up the backup catcher role.D-train wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:07 pmFord is projected to put up 1 WAR making minimum was so why in the hell would we sign Garver???harmony wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:01 pm

So they are trading Castillo, right? I read some of the replies of Card fans on that site. Some reasonable replies but what do they think JC and Arroyo are in A ball. So easy to look them up if they have the internets...lolharmony wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 9:50 pmIt's worth noting that that this year the Washington Nationals finished last in fWAR from the catcher position (but for the Angels, a distant, distant last):

I think they will keep both Castillo and Ford with the theme of Keeping the Band together that Jerry mentioned.
