I got kine for 50% off too on a President's day sale. Good God that sounds like such a Meh pick. I hope Law is wrong as usual.Bil522 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 8:33 amWith Nick Gonzales still on the board here is who Keith Law of the Athletic thinks the M's will draft:
"6. Seattle Mariners: Reid Detmers, LHP, Louisville
I think Detmers, who might end up with 70 command but pitches with just average fastball velocity, could go here if he doesn’t go to the Jays, and if there’s anything different in the top five I’d expect Seattle to just take whoever falls to them (rather than focusing on a specific name)."
Speaking of the Athletic, I got a full year subscription for $29.95. If any of you have an education based email address or have a student with one that gets you access to a 50% savings each and every year. Just an FYI

Re: Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking
I felt the exact same way Law did. I just didn't see the type of player that scouting reports were writing on this kid. His stock was dropping along with Casey Martin's this year. Great pitching options at the top.Bil522 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 3:25 pmAlso here is a different take from Keith Law of the Athletic:
"21. St. Louis Cardinals: Garrett Mitchell, OF, UCLA
Mitchell is an 80 runner and sure centerfielder, but teams are scared off by multiple factors, from questions about whether his swing will work with wood to health concerns given his diabetes. He reminds me a bit of Drew Stubbs, who wasn’t exactly the same kind of player — more power, a bit less speed, a slightly better defender at the same age — but went in the top ten picks in 2006."
Here is Drew Stubbs career......we definately want someone better than he was with #6

Thanks for weighing, Ben. Much appreciated. Why haven't they set a date for the draft yet. The NFL pulled it off beautifully almost a month ago.

Re: Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking
That's a good question. A good portion of my time has been taken up spending most of it in "Coronaville" as we call it in the hospital. Its been starting to get distributed evenly now that other departments have been pitching in to help ER, since there haven't been any elective surgeries in over a month. So I was glad to see this thread with all the work you put in DT and read up.
My personal thoughts, most, but not all of the websites mocking Garrett Mitchell to us is just lazy scouting and piggy backing off of Baseball America(which mocked him to us in late February, when his stock was still sky high). I haven't been able to recently look at who I think is the best candidate for our team, but Keith Law threw out a major vote for Reid Detmers. The fact that Law and I were as high on this guy is so rewarding to myself just to know we are on the same page.
I think it could be down to Veen, Gonzales, or Detmers at 6. And to say he's Marco 2.0 isn't too far off. Detmers has better command and a better fastball by a few ticks. He's also got two plus plus pitches and 4 plus pitches overall to go along with 70 command that screams C to the Z loud and clear.
Don't sleep on Patrick Bailey either as I believe that he's a strong dark horse candidate.

Re: Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking
Gosh. I wish I had a real concrete answer here to give you. I think all you can ask for is BPA at this point with the lack of scouting reports for the 2020 season. I think you go best player on youre board regardless of whether they are college or prep. The Jarred Kelenic acquisition history is a big indicator of this.
How much stock can we put into Dipoto's comments about wanting to draft an up the middle hitting prospect? Right there, that screams Nick Gonzales, Patrick Bailey, Garrett Mitchell, or Zac Veen(although Veen is projected long term into a corner OF spot. I mean, out of all of those guys I like Gonzales the best at 6, but will he even be there? And if he's not, do we go Detmers, whose needle needle was skyrocketing up? So hard to predict with no baseball going on at the moment. All you can do is pour over what scouting reports from this year which isn't a lot.
