Dipoto went from missing on nearly everything to striking gold on everything about midseason last year imo.
One hypothesis I've been mulling over is Tom McNamara.
He moved from scouting director to Special Assistant to the GM. Something I can only relate to Dwight Schrute...
Why was McNamara the culprit? Hear me out.
Part of the Mariners problem in recent years, in my opinion, is the light hitting speedsters they tried calling corner outfielders.
Check out McNamara's claim to fame on his Baseball Reference page, for example:
No doubt a former shortstop who thought he could have played CF or even RF or LF if they had just given him a shot. Since he was "promoted" to Special Assistant.. to.. the.. GM the Mariners have completely changed course on acquisitions. Out with the Ben Gamel's, in with the Domingo Santana's. Out with the Mike Zunino's, in with the Omar Narvaez's.McNamara stole 71 bases in college in 1988, a school record. He was undrafted but played for the 1988 Bellingham Mariners and hit .224/.323/.245 in 50 games. He stole four bases in eight tries and scored 13 runs. He fielded .912 at shortstop. He then became a coach at Rockland Community College.
It's hard to tell exactly what happened, but as far as the 180 degree difference in player acquisitions, it appears to have coincided with, no surprise, a new scouting director replacing McNamara.
