“You have got to credit the Brewers,” Servais said after the game, noting Hancock is young and learning. “They were some kind of disciplined this whole series. I’m really impressed. They have a young team, they did not chase. There were a number of edge pitches in this series the Brewers just didn’t swing at.”

It’s an approach Servais and coaches have been emphasizing with their own hitters for some time now. Lay off the edge pitches you can’t do much with, and you could be rewarded with better pitches to hit – as the Brewers were – or by getting ahead in the count should the edge pitch travel out of the zone and is called a ball.

The fact that the Brewers were doing what the Mariners should be doing did not get by Servais.

“It is something you pride yourself in when you have a group that is buying in like that,” he said. “We haven’t been there – yet. We certainly have the capability of doing that but you have to be very disciplined in buying into an approach. They did it today and we weren’t able to do it.”
That's not a good philosophy. If you lay off edge pitches, pitchers will try to throw more of them for strikes. Lay off balls and edge strikes (if you can't handle them) but you'd better be able to at least foul them off with 2 strikes because the pitcher isn't going to reward you with a lollipop down the middle.
Maybe i'm wrong. Just seems to me any decent Major League SP can hit their spots and will paint the edges all game long if they think the batters won't swing unless it's down the middle. An ML batter has to be able to do something with those pitches.

ALRIGHT JP..

It's 0-2. Get your bat off your fcking shoulder and get ready to swing at some close pitches. Don't watch strike 3 fly by then bitch at the ump. It was close enough to fcking swing at.

Another great start for our offense. Jp suks Julio and Haniger hit it hard. Polanco worked a walk. Really really hope our pitching does not allow Jay's lineup to heat up.

Jp has had a lot of bat on the shoulder early. Watching tons of strikes go by then hacking away. Awful awful start.

I just noticed it's C. B. Bucknor umping behind the plate.

Maybe I should just paste my pro-automated-strike-zone rant now.

Cantzone has a lucky ab once in a while rest are strikeouts. Strikes out way to much to play in this league. Sad he leads team in homers.

And he looks dumb when he strikes out. Unlike JP, who looks super cool when he strikes out.

Alejandro Kirk looks like a guy who tries to sell speakers to strangers in a Walmart parking lot.
