$16M to spend
Re: $16M to spend
On Haniger: the bat speed is mostly still there and he's got a great work ethic. I'm not quite ready to write him off.

I mean... he's unplayable in the outfield and even if he's somehow a .750 OPS hitter... you've got 2x right-handed geezers eating AB's at DH between him and Garver.
I really don't think both can exist on the same roster... certainly not eating nearly $30 million between the two.
Re: $16M to spend
Garver is your backup catcher for next year. He'll be overpaid, but that's his role on the roster. If he hits he'll play some DH too. If Haniger hits he'll be the DH/5th outfielder/bench bat, and if he doesn't hit then they'll probably release him at some point, likely after the all star break when the season is all but over. This org tends to delay decisions like that.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 5:51 amI mean... he's unplayable in the outfield and even if he's somehow a .750 OPS hitter... you've got 2x right-handed geezers eating AB's at DH between him and Garver.

If you're worried about geezers on the roster, how about the lunacy of signing Carlos Santana or Justin Turner? Supposedly they have $16 million to spend and right now it looks like some portion of that is going to one of those two.
Personally, I wouldn't spend one dollar on Santana/Turner types. My priority would be the bullpen. The best chance this team has for a winning season next year is by preventing runs and so that's what I would lean in to.

It's like bumgarner in Arizona or abreu in Houston, I would bet money that haniger is on the opening day roster. They will take that shot at getting something out of him. Then yeah, at some point during the season they could decide to open the roster spot. But they aren't going to preemptively dump him before giving him another shot

$16m to spend? Where does the line form for us fans to bend over and take it again?

I tend to agree because they are cheap idiots but would you have bet Marco was going to be on the OD roster this past season?Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:38 amIt's like bumgarner in Arizona or abreu in Houston, I would bet money that haniger is on the opening day roster. Okay, or JK for that matter if I'm getting your point which I think I do. I don't see dipoto selling prospects just to recoup that salary, and I'm not sure I even want him to. But could Haniger be part of a larger more complicated deal such as the JK one? I guess that's a possibility. Moving Haniger with a starter for instance. If dipoto could come up with a convoluted way of doing it, I could see that. I do think dipoto looks at Haniger differently. He traded for him last season knowing he would be facing paying him $17 mil this season. I don't see him just bailing on it. To me that would be odd

It would be smart to dump him because it is a sunk cost but I agree. Insecure people hate to admit mistakes and he never does until it is too late. Because of this I agree with you post AS break DFA.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 5:43 pmOkay, or JK for that matter if I'm getting your point which I think I do. Here are some under the radar 3B candidates. We could trade for Urias (I know not another Urias!) straight up for Randy to replace Santander. Not great but much better than last year's shit show at 3B.
