Yep, first time ever if it happens. With 5-team divisions it was bound to happen.

In the NFL you have 4-team divisions so now and then you'll have a 7-9 division champion.

The NBA has 5-team divisions but as far as I know only the Bullets ever won a division title with a losing record, in 1972 at 38-44 when there only 4 teams.

The NHL has 8-team divisions so it's almost impossible for everyone to have a losing record although the Golden Knights technically went 39-43 last season but with all their OT loss "loser points" finished ahead of the Ducks who technically went 43-39. Also, when the NHL expanded in 1967 they put all the expansion teams not only in the same division but in their own conference. All of them had losing records. And yes, one of them got to play in the Finals.

I don't know...the complaints, 54%, dipoto didn't do enough, signing Naylor, all that. That really isn't what this was about, the timing was correct, 54% would have comfortably won it. They waited their turn back when the Astros had a clamp on the division, and here it was. It be one thing if there was the normal competition for the division, but for them not to be able to even come up with a .500 record when it would have won the division. That combination, who had this on their bingo card? This is their first losing record in five seasons? All they had to do is play .500 baseball, that's it. That would have been criminally underperforming in terms of expectations, just wow

I am not any good at recollection, the flow of the season. It just all seems crappy to me. But I was reading a retrospective article. It pointed out there was a high point, In July? They had a winning streak, they were three games over. 500. Their odds for winning the division were actually high. Then they went in the tank. For as crappy as the first have was the second half was even crappier. That just seems weird to me. It wasn't like they were crippled with injuries or whatever. How did they manage to follow that first half with an even worse second half?

That's fine, I don't see it. They didn't need a killer instinct. All they had to do was be their typical mediocre selves. I don't think there's an explanation to begin with. It's like so much that goes on with that team, the curse lives on. If they had managed to win the division with a .500 record and gotten bounced out of the playoffs then we could have had the normal round of complaints about sustainability, not doing enough, bla bla bla. This to me is beyond belief, how much further this goes
