Portland is about 150 miles west of Tri-cities. One degree of longitude equals 54.6 miles and the Earth rotates one degree every 4 min. So the difference is 11.75 minutes of time.

Question: how fast does the surface of the Earth move relative to a point at the center of the planet? (Or what speed would you have to travel in a westward direction in order to remain perpetually in the same time of day?)
24,901 mi/24 hours 1,038 mph When the Concorde existed you could celebrate New Years even in London and then fly to NYC and celebrate it there a few hours later.

Not sure if this is what you are asking, but at the equator it’s 1000 miles per hour, so at the equator, the earth moves 66.67 miles in the same 4 minutes
Actually my calculations were messed up because the 54.6 figure is dependent on latitude and probably applies to the equator.

So it's more than 11.75 minutes lol.

I once had to drop off a cousin in Las Vegas for a flight are around 10pm on New Year’s Eve. When I drive home, I crossed the border and it was after 12. I never technically experienced the new years clock strike midnight

So you crossed between 11pm and 12p in NV and 12pm and 1 am in Utah?

Yes. Most of Nevada is in the Pacific Standard Time (with the exception of Jackpot).
Utah is in Mountain Time.

I was in my 20s and single. I was mostly sad I didn’t have anything better going on for New Year’s Eve, which is why I remember it
