Julio put up 16 war, Justin put up 4.2 war in their first three seasons
I was comparing like ages, from 21-23 when Upton put up 13.7 WAR.

He came up at 19 years old and struggled, compared to Julio who came up at 21.

Julio has better defense, that much seems obvious.

But their bats seem pretty comparable.

Okay, Both talented players, Julio with more speed to his game I believe. Its kinda surprising the 30 career war for Upton, Julio over halfway there already. The deal with Julio is his declining numbers season to season isn't it

Had the article the other day where they comped Julio to nelson Cruz, Upton would seem to make more sense than that

I think the problem with Julio is probably related to coaching. I'm holding out hope that a full season with Edgar and Seitzer will show some improvement. I don't KNOW that it's a problem, but I hate that he has a private hitting coach. I think it's likely that he's getting conflicting advice.

What I don't get at all with Julio is the approach issue. Who is telling him it makes sense to be super aggressive on early pitches, on borderline and outside pitches? Yes, I think there's a swing issue as well, and those can take a while to work out. But there's nothing stopping the player from changing his approach at the plate. Just work the count like every other major leaguer.

Totally agree, Gabe. It's like what is the best way to drink a glass of water. Mind boggling.

Most of these guys have private hitting coaches, along with trainers and dietitians, certainly if you're in the $20 mil a year range. Again, Diaz is in communication with Edgar, I'm sure they have nothing but respect for each other, they work together

This is what I keep readiing, what they want to work on with Julio, Edgars middle away approach. Its something that is easily tracked
Seitzer then explained how a consistent middle-away approach can help bring down Rodríguez’s chase rate, which has been among the highest in the league. According to Baseball Savant, Rodríguez had a 33.5% chase rate (19th percentile) in 2022, a 37.4% chase rate (8th percentile) in 2023 and a 37.3% chase rate (6th percentile) in 2024.

“Guys are going to have chase,” Seitzer said. “Chase comes with this game because of the electric pitching that we see nowadays – the high velos, the late-breaking stuff, the strike-to-ball stuff. If you get on hitters too much about ‘don’t chase,’ then you’re making them late on 90% of the fastballs they’re gonna see.

“So being consistent with the approach – the more you think middle of the field to opposite field – the better you see the ball. You’re able to check off the secondary stuff that are chase pitches more often than you were if you were just in (the mode of) ‘see ball, hit ball and swing at thrown ball.'”

Julio Compared to Cody Bellinger through age 24
Bellinger is now 29 and has only put up 6.9 WAR since. Hopefully Julio does a bit better than that.
