It's true they already had him under control for six years but you get into arbitration and those last three years can get very expensive, IE the tigers and Tarik Skubal. If he develops into a star they are spending a lot more than $12 MIL four years from now. There's also a nine year team option. If he develops the way they hope it will be a deal

No they are really not.

Trea Turner was about as good of a SS as there is. Speed, power, average, D, etc. He earned 46M for his controlled years 2015 through until 2023. Even if you pop on 10% salary escalation that is still 51M for 6+ years. Those fucking idiots only win if Colt is the best player in baseball. Literally Bobby Witt Jr. That is a bet that any fucking casino takes and laughs at.

That dude has good tools but he is not going to be a super star at that level. He has 50 speed which is average. They D and arm rate to slightly above average at 55. His best tool is hit which is a 65. But he is the 7th rated SS on the list. He should be able to stick at SS but he doesn’t have Trea Turner or Bobby Witt Jr written across his profile. He doesn’t have the speed or the D to match those two. His ceiling is basically as good JP the year he had 5.2 WAR a 130s OPS+ and 19 HR. I think Colt develops a little more power than JP and he looks like he could steal 20 bags a year. Colt does not need to be up this year. This was not a smart move. It hurts.

I remember when I was complaining about Chris Petersen, and I felt like he was doing some real strange shit, particularly on offense, being overly conservative, who he played, etc. In Browning's Sophomore season it all clicked. That was year two of his coaching run at the U of W. I took it all back, admitted it might have been what it took to get here. Dipoto bumbling for over a decade isn't excusable by losing the ALCS in year ten and now being competitive. Sorry, it's not. He fucked up, over and over again. Captain has listed off all the teams that have had a decade of more success. He was a seller at the trade deadline one year, one game out of the playoffs, on a team that had the longest playoff draught in North fucking America. He has been mostly a failure, and let's hope he fell dumb lucky into this. BUT, is it any coincidence that he is actually not the GM anymore? Now that we are actually competitive?

I honestly have no concern now with how long it took to get here, none. I'm happy with things If they wanted to fire him five years ago then fine but they didn't. So far as I'm concerned I've moved on. I still don't particularly like the guy to but I am not gonna bother to continue hashing over things from years ago.

Lind put up a .717 OPS for the M's and they finished a couple games out of the playoffs. Dipoto cost them the playoffs again in 2021 when He traded away their closer while they were only a game out of first place. The Bullpen blew several saves after that and they missed the playoffs by a couple games again. His strengths are in compiling a farm system and thinking about long term issues but he has a real deficiency in his ability to construct a complete roster. He has done some good no doubt but he lacks that killer instinct to finish the job and would rather look down the road than jump on an opportunity when it presents itself.

The M's have a Window here with their rotation. The reality is half these guys will be gone 3 years from now. You have a team that is close but not quite there. They need another Middle of the order bat and another reliever. but instead of going out and jumping on it and signing guys that can push them over the top during this window, they are giving money to a minor Leaguer in the hopes that it might pay dividends in 2031 and 2032.

That Trumbo trade was absurd, seems Dipoto doesn’t like him, he traded him when he was with the angels too.

But as I’ve said before, through their bolstering the farm system in recent years, they’ve been able to deal more so from a position of strength, which was always a rarity with this organization.
