If I could put you in the GM seat I would. I'm pissed about not getting Olson too. I'm just trying to look at it from a realistic point of view and figure out wtf our GM is doing.bpj wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 8:46 pmObviously it's unlikely with 10 other contending teams, but nobody needs some dope acting like it's a 0% chance.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 8:15 pmNot because I said so, but because Jerry said so(Ty France is our 1B in 2022). Let's wager. Put you're money where you're mouth is? We can even tilt the odds. 5:1? 10:1?
Dipoto has traded for the A's last 3 first basemen, I'm not going to say it's impossible with this one.
In the end it would save the Mariners $100M by getting Olsen and moving France to 3B instead of getting Semien and moving Toro to 3B.
I'm sure that thought won't cross their mind...

So 10 pitchers of beer vs 1. Your on and the bet is Ty France First base or not.......

It's the offseason, there's not much going on, so if guys want to talk about a player that's clearly on the trade block, seems like fair game.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 9:17 pmIf I could put you in the GM seat I would. Just seems like you want to shut people up about it when it's a very viable trade. From what I heard Dipoto didn't say he liked everyone the A's have on the block except Matt Olsen.

It was a viable trade scenario until Dipoto came out and said what he did. Same bullshit scenario about his handling of the shortstop situation.bpj wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 9:28 pmIt's the offseason, there's not much going on, so if guys want to talk about a player that's clearly on the trade block, seems like fair game.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 9:17 pmIf I could put you in the GM seat I would. I mean at least we know who our first baseman and shortstop is going into 2022. Down side of it is, there are better alternatives. So we can sit here and rosterbate all day about who's playing first base, but we all know who its going to be on Opening Day.

If I were a betting man, I would agree and put money on who is playing first next season. To a large extent I agree.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Sun Nov 21, 2021 11:19 pmIt was a viable trade scenario until Dipoto came out and said what he did. But here’s the thing: why should we accept anything that JD says publicly? If there is anything I have learned about Dipoto is that he is predictably unpredictable. Moreover, if he honestly stands by everything he says in public, he loses leveraging capital in trade negotiations. I’m sure half the shit he says in public is either deflecting a question with a bullshit answer, or saying something he knows is untrue knowing it will help closed door negotiations. I mean what CEO of any major corporation goes on the record ahead of contract negotiations?
In the summer of 2018, Dipoto was saying all kinds of shit about what would happen when Cano was back - including saying he would be “taking reps at first base”. And then he went on to say this
“I don’t want to state the obvious in a blunt way, but if you think we are better team without Robinson Cano in our lineup, you’re crazy,” Dipoto said. “We are a better team when he’s in there.
By November, Cano was traded to the Mets.
Look, I don’t want to get inside Dipoto’s head. I’m sure it’s as scary as shit in there. But I don’t believe any of the shit he tells reporters is gospel. And for this reason, it’s fun the hangout on boards like this an wax poetic about what we’d like to see happening or to armchair GM irrespective of what Dipoto does or doesn’t say in public. It’s just fun.

Re: Jerry says he has meetings set-up
He doesn't say anything about not trading him, he said they would be a better team if Cano was on it. He didn't trade Cano to improve the team, he did it to begin a rebuild. I don't see any credibility issues there
He could trade for Olson, he hasn't said he won't. What he has said is France is the first baseman next season, and that was really only a few days ago. So the issue would come down to where would Olson play if France is the first baseman?
So this is about France moving to 3rd? So after announcing to the world he is the first basemen, he has to go to France and ask him to change positions. Yes ask, some here think Dipoto can play monarch and do whatever he feels like with players. That would be a losing proposition with as hostile a HR situation that is ML ball players and management.
For all the glee one might feel for acquiring Olson, it be a strange way to run a baseball club. Dipoto could be doing as much damage to the clubhouse through his lack of consistency as he might get adding Olson

Re: Jerry says he has meetings set-up
It wouldn't be strange at all.
If Evan White hadn't been terrible we'd still be planning on France moving.
France is just our best current option at 1B.
He's also probably our best option at 3B, given time with Perry Hill.
So it comes down to where they can get the most performance. The cost of that performance may/should factor in as well.
Olsen is a bigger boost on offense than Semien and he costs substantially less. Pretty straighforward arguments.
Olsen 1B+France 3B+Toro 2B >>> France 1B+Semien 2B+Toro 3B
All day. Every day.

Re: Jerry says he has meetings set-up
That, you don't tell a player that if you are not serious about. Don't tell me Dipoto can just change his mind. That would create credibility issues with the clubhouse. Careful consideration needs to go into decisions like that.Divish, meanwhile, reported some updates on the existing roster, which will help inform Seattle (and its fans) which free agents are worth pursuing. Notably, Ty France has been told he will be the Mariners' starting first baseman next season.
Re: Jerry says he has meetings set-up
Oakland had the right idea of playing Chapman at 3B, and a big bat Olson at 1B.
I think France wants to play everyday, not that he wants to box out a position at 1B.
The thing is that France will probably lose a few games as he gets HBP a lot. He hasn't, knock on wood, run into missing a lot of games yet. There's no backup plan if the first baseman (France) misses 4 weeks due to injuries. Now if Olson goes on the IL for say, 30 days they can put France there. There would be a dropoff at 3B, or 2B, but they can sort of offset that with a better defensive player. Last year the fallback st 1B was Bauers. This year it seems to be Torrens, who would be a big dropoff both offensively and defensively.

You guys can rosterbate to your hearts content, don't mind it a bit. It just runs against the statement dipoto made clarifying his roster next season, and it was made after news of Olson being available, dipoto said it at the winter meetings.
Notably, Ty France has been told he will be the Mariners' starting first baseman next season.
