Weee there death threats before the 1972 Munich Olympics?mostonmike wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 2:55 pmI think it was a crazed fan of Steffi Graf who wanted to stop Seles from dominating the sport. Very weird and we'd have to stab about 600 players to get the Mariners to World Series contention if we wanted to go down that route.
Garver getting death threats

Re: Garver getting death threats
If someone wanted to kill someone, why would they warn them with a threat first?

Re: Garver getting death threats
The IRA often used to issue coded warnings before terrorist attacks on Mainland Britain. It would sound like I was defending them if I said they were aware they were going to cause casualties but warning police would minimise the death tolls. An attack that killed hundreds instead of a few would have damaged their overall political cause.

Obviously people sending death threats are losers. No place for that.
As an athlete making $12 million a year to utterly fail at your job, you gotta develop a thicker skin or take steps to block communication from fans if you can't.
Suck it up, tell fans you're going to be better, and figure it out.

I agree with this, SoB. He plays a game for a living, and his salary is ostensibly paid by the fans. He is accountable to himself, the team, the franchise and the fan base. He is paid a lot of money to basically do one job, and he’s not doing it very well. So he can expect jeers and boos and social media outrage. Develop thick skin, then focus on getting better.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 5:07 pmObviously people sending death threats are losers. No place for that.

That said - here are my other thoughts:
1. Death threats are never acceptable. Ever. And they are increasingly common these days, particularly in civil and political discourse. Our first amendment guarantees your right to disagree with someone, but it does not allow you to yell “fire” in a crowded theater - nor to extend credible threats on another person’s life. It is an illegal act of cowardice.
2. Mitch Garver has at least one child. As soon as someone threatens his life, they are by extension threatening his family’s lives. I don’t blame him for going public with it.
3. It is his right to go public and out the cowards. To stay silent is to normalize the behavior.
4. It’s a fucking game for crying out loud. Who takes this so seriously that they would threaten someone else’s life just because they can’t hit a ball with a stick. I can get frothy about the M’s now and the n, but I can’t wrap my head around being so worked up that you threaten someone’s life. WTF?

I agree, if he received death threats he should out them. Did he?Big_Maple wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 6:20 pmI agree with this, SoB. I don’t know. He opened up about it to Divish. Divish published the interview and we are now discussing it on this forum.bpj wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 6:44 pmI agree, if he received death threats he should out them. I don’t know what, if any legal action he took.
Re: Garver getting death threats
The death threats I believe are from disgruntled gamblers. There was an article about it a few months back, how it's becoming a more common issue in the sport.
