Personally, I wouldn't spend one dollar on Santana/Turner types. My priority would be the bullpen. The best chance this team has for a winning season next year is by preventing runs and so that's what I would lean in to.
I texted the Bump and Stacey show last week when they were talking about how important those guys being a "presence" was. I said something like..."so, we need to spend money on guys to hold these babies hands instead of guys that can actually hit a baseball!?"

I'm so tired of the excuses. Guys like Julio and Randy should be able to hit whether there is a vet in the Clubhouse cooing in their ear or not. At what time do we stop babying these mental midgets. Hire a fucking shrink, not an overpriced bat to hit .190 and strike out while swinging from his ass and hitting the occasional HR.

The supposed importance of veteran presence and leadership is wildly overvalued by fans and some members of the media. It's insanity. My personal view (which you and probably everyone else reading this aren't the least bit interested in), is that this comes from our deeply ingrained sense of how the world should work, which includes younger people learning and benefiting from the wisdom of their elders. It's tribal, actually, and it's embedded in our storytelling and mythmaking. It's Luke Skywalker learning from Obi Wan and then Yoda. It's every war movie you've ever seen where the veteran sergeant guides and helps develop the younger soldiers, or the Kung Fu movie where the student learns from the master. And in baseball, it's mostly bullshit.

Totally agree. Hitting a baseball is such a unique skill. Either you can hit big league pitching or you can't. And having a manager, two hitting coaches and a couple old dudes on the team isn't going to change that.

Jude pulled that number out of his a$$. In the interview with JD he said you would never openly discuss what your budget was.

I'll bet Jude has it about right, with the roster where it is now. I think it will probably be a very quiet offseason.

JD and Justin would not let it leak to Jude. Jude got that shit from his ass. He went to the "water cooler" and filled his cup while commenting to his co-worker: "Do you think they'll be about the same as last year?"~"Yep."

There is simply no way that statement lines up with:
JD~
1. "We want upgrades at 2B & 3B, and we will add 1/2 of 1B (Santana or JT)"

2. "We are not making moves based on Budget"

3. "Trading from our SP is option #Z"

JD is usually pretty up front with the plan. And so, I believe that he was sincere in his statements about this off-season's blueprint. But you can't look at JD's statements 1,2,3 and conclude that Jude is a fly on the wall in Mariner strategy sessions.

That's why it is not a source but somebody's guess. In this case it is Adam Jude's guess. It is probably not any more precise than what any of the other forum members guesses based on years of following the team.

I will offer that I think it was an excellent attention-grabbing X. It fits right along with:
"It is our strategy not to sign long FA deals"
&
"I think the fans should feel lucky that,,,"
"54% is our 10-year target"
"We think long-term, not about going all-in on 1 or 2 seasons"

It was a good way of Jude getting his name out there. He is from that clout chasing generation.
