Buys out his next 2 arb years, 2 free agent years. Gives Santanas family financial security with and the Mariners a low risk high reward contract.
I'd take 4/40 on a guy like Santana over another 200 million on trying to buy a free agent outfielder for the same production, or trying to rely on Jake Fraley and Mallex Smith to replace his production.
I think it would be a win for both sides. Santana is stacking up hits like Ichiro, except that his hits go out of the infield and put runs on the board.
I can think of worse things than a 1B/DH jobshare between Vogey and Santana.
However, until Mallex Smith can prove he's not the .600 OPS player he's become again, he's easily the odd man out in my outfield.
