It's about what it takes for another club to talk to him in the first place. In order to do that they need to be in position of offering a promotion. It doesn't matter what dipoto wants, this would be between the red Sox and the mariners, they haven't gotten to talk to dipoto yet.
The cubs poached Epstein by being able to offer the title of president, the mariners are playing defense by giving him the title of president in the first place. Technically, Epstein was traded for three minor leaguers, but the sport maintains a professional courtesy to allow executives to pursue job openings at other clubs if it involves a promotion. Privately, executives acknowledge that has led to a bit of titular chicanery in which roles are given elevated titles to pry talented executives from rivals or play defense against such poaching

I don't know how his contract is set up put they would just need to offer him more money and if he can get out of his M's deal why wouldn't he take a gig with the same title but more money, prestige and more resources? He might be tired of M's ownership jacking him around and making him look like an idiot but maybe that's on him.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 6:58 amYou guys are really missing the point, read that again. And I'm telling you they can't. He isn't breaking his contact just to make more money. ML teams do not poach each other executives by just offering them more money, it's characterized here as etiquette. In order for dipoto to break his contact and move to the red Sox it would need to be construed as a promotion. And with the mariners giving him the title of president that be difficult to do. It's how MLB teams have worked things out.

How long is his contract? Maybe that's the main thing here.

Yeah, it would seem like public information, his last extension was three years, but I can't find anything about this one other than multi year
Re: The True Cost of Draft, Develop & Trade
He's a relatively young man still. He could have several years left on his current contract and then go somewhere else. He could also have an opt-out built in to the contract after x number of years. There's a lot we don't know, but I doubt he's locked in for the rest of his adult working life.

Of course not, the question would be would he turn down another extension in order to become a FA. He is a lot more likely to be fired and move on than breaking his contact. It's the same in football, in order for a team to contact your personal it needs to be a promotion. Offering a HC position to your OC for instance. You can't contact an OC to be your OC with it just being about more money
Re: The True Cost of Draft, Develop & Trade
My original statement was that he might be interested in the Boston job when it opens up, likely in the next year or two. I'm thinking now that he's probably locked in for that immediate time horizon, but I'd be surprised if he's still under contract three years out. My main point was that he's ambitious and probably would like to get one of the prestige jobs in baseball, and I still think that's true. I could also be misjudging him.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 3:34 pmOf course not, the question would be would he turn down another extension in order to become a FA. Okay, but I wouldn't underestimate the prestige of being president of baseball operations for the mariners. I think that was a significant step for both the club and him to take. I'm not saying he is here for the rest of his career but on the other hand, I don't think he sees the job as a stepping stone. At some point things will sour and he will move on.
