Here's an article looking at whether defense or offense gets you to a WS. I think as it points out you need some of both. They pair it with home runs, home runs, pitching and defense. It's interesting, the mariners offense is built for home runs even though that seems to be discouraged here on the forum. Players are supposed to quit swinging for the fences. But if you drill into what successful teams do to reach a WS it's probably going to be pitching, defense and home runs.
