Careful Nick hits in the non-humidor version of Coors Field in Las Cruses, New Mexico.

That's my fear too. That it won't translate to the bigs. Although I think he will hit for a high average. If the power were just as real as the hit tool, ala Torkelson, he'd be gone by the 3rd pick in the draft.
Re: Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking
I know and the last guy we took out of NM was a disaster. However. Nick also destroyed the CC wood bat league vs. the best amateur pitching in the land.

If he can hit 12 in 16 games even in a hitters paradise, he can hit 20-25 in 160 big league games. Besides, he is a second baseman. He doesn't need to hit 40.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2020 10:59 amThat's my fear too. That it won't translate to the bigs. Although I think he will hit for a high average. If Hancock falls to us because of his FOUR mediocre starts to start the season before the lock down I would be good with that. If you recall Gilbert fell to us because he was a little shaky (ended up being due to mono) at the end of his career.
Emerson Hancock - Prospect Profile
MLB.com - April: "His go-to breaking ball is a mid-80s slider with which he manipulates the break exceptionally well, and Hancock also has a hard curveball that he relied on more in high school. He hasn't had to use his changeup much but he fades and locates it well, earning some plus-plus grades at times."
Prospects Live - Mar. 24th: "Hancock has a four-pitch mix that all flash plus at times, anchored by a mid 90s fastball with plus riding life that has touched 99 mph. Hancock has shown above average control and shows the potential for above average command, repeating his delivery well."
James Weisser - Off The Bench Baseball - Mar. 23rd: "Hancock is still arguably the top pitcher in this year’s draft class thanks to his outstanding repertoire, but with his early struggles it’s gotten closer."
Dan Zielinki - Baseball Prospect Journal - Mar. 22nd: "Emerson Hancock is a 6-foot-4, 215-pound righty who has a high-90s fastball, an effective curveball and a changeup that shows above-average potential. He was a possible option for the first-overall pick this year but was inconsistent against average competition in his four starts this spring."
Keith Law - The Athletic - Mar. 16th: "Hancock was mentioned by scouts as a possible 1-1 pick before the season, but hasn’t come out strongly, between a rougher delivery, reduced command, and a lot more use of his two sliders than his plus (or better) changeup."
JJ Cooper - Athlon Sports - Mar. 10th: "If he just stays healthy and throws the same upper-90s fastball, slider, curve and changeup he showed last year, he’ll go near the top of the draft."
Jeff Ellis - 247 Sports - Feb. 14th: "Not since Alec Hansen or Mike Matuella has there been a college pitcher who, while near the top of every board, could end up falling out of the first. Hancock missed time due to injury a year ago and his low strikeout rate also raised some concerns."
Carlos Collazo - Baseball America - Jan. 31st : "Hancock established himself as one of the best arms in college baseball during a tremendous sophomore season in 2019. He posted a 1.99 ERA—the eighth best mark in Georgia history—and led the SEC with a 0.84 WHIP while allowing one run or fewer in nine of his 14 starts."
Jim Callis - MLB.com - Dec 4th : "Hancock has three plus pitches (a 94-99 mph fastball, a mid-80s slider and a fading changeup), his curveball isn't far behind and he pounds the strike zone with all of them."

Re: Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking
Interesting Nick was playing SS this season. You guys know me. I prefer to root for High performers with non prototypical pedigree than Big guys with lesser results. The ole chip on the shoulder guys like Doug Baldwin and Kyle Seager....
Nick Gonzales - Prospect Profile
MLB.com - April: "The 5-foot-10 middle infielder has as much pure hitting ability as just about any bat in the 2020 class. He does it with a short and compact swing and a ton of bat speed, controlling the bat head extremely well through the strike zone."
Prospects Live - Mar. 24th: "Gonzales has some skeptics because of his small frame, weaker competition, and an extreme hitter’s environment, but his performance is pretty undeniable at this point. While being a below-average 2B in the field hurts his stock a bit, Gonzales has a chance to be a 60+ hit, 55 power type prospect."
James Weisser - Off The Bench Baseball - Mar. 23rd: "He’s had a terrific start to his season – including smashing 5 HR’s in one day – and he’s still hitting over .500 on weekend, with 12 HR’s overall."
Dan Zielinki - Baseball Prospect Journal - Mar. 22nd: "He’s played at 3,900 feet above sea level at New Mexico State, but his success last summer in the Cape Cod League has quieted some of the critics. He played shortstop this spring but profiles as an offensive-minded second baseman in pro ball."
Keith Law - The Athletic - Mar. 16th: "Gonzales hit five homers in a game this season, albeit at 3900 feet above sea level; he can hit, and is likely to hit more for average than for big power, with a potential move to second down the road."
JJ Cooper - Athlon Sports - Mar. 10th: "He led NCAA Division I with a .432 average in 2019 (with 16 home runs), and he followed that up by hitting .351 with a wood bat in the Cape Cod League during the summer."
Jeff Ellis - 247 Sports - Feb. 14th: "Gonzales has done it all at New Mexico State, putting up numbers you would expect if you dropped a high school player onto a Little League team. His high-level Cape performance answered all questions about the level of competition and his playing environment."
Carlos Collazo - Baseball America - Jan. 31st : "A freshman All-American after a .347/.425/.596 season with the Aggies, Gonzales took his offense to a new level last year, leading the country in hitting (.432) and ranking among the top five in major offensive categories like RBI (5th), runs (5th), on-base percentage (5th) and slugging (3rd)."

Re: Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking
Veen looks good to but JD would have to be pretty confident to take him. I guess he could trade him like the Mets traded JK.
Zac Veen - Prospect Profile
MLB.com - April: "He's more hit over power in games with excellent bat speed, especially because he utilizes a spread out stance, but he'll show off big-time power in batting practice when he stands more upright and creates leverage, showing the ability to loft the ball consistently."
Prospects Live - Mar. 24th: "He’s a 6-foot-5 left-handed hitting outfielder from Spruce Creek high school with an advanced feel for his barrel and legit pull-side pop. The upside is sky high with Veen, but there’s always inherent risk when taking a high school kid."
James Weisser - Off The Bench Baseball - Mar. 23rd: "Since he’s facing good competition in Florida and the weather is better suited for playing baseball, Veen has a good chance to see his stock rise if he can continue to build on his strong performance."
Dan Zielinki - Baseball Prospect Journal - Mar. 22nd: "He has the potential to stick in center field but might be better suited for a corner position. The 6-4, 190-pound left-handed hitter has the chance to be an impact bat in pro ball, but he does have some swing-and-miss concern in his game."
Keith Law - The Athletic - Mar. 16th: "Zac Veen, the hitting machine, might have the best swing in the draft class, a smooth, fast left-handed stroke that produces hard contact and big power."
Carlos Collazo - Baseball America - Jan. 31st : "A projectable, 6-foot-5 lefthanded hitter, Veen has a chance for five above-average tools and has tantalizing power upside as he continues to add weight. He’s already taken a big step in that direction over the offseason, adding around 20 pounds of strength to his frame"

An offensive second baseman sounds great! Maybe we could move him to 3B like we did last time and then spend $200 mil for another one lol
Re: Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking
Ok, I know we have plenty of OF's but read this article from BA on Zac Veen. He needs to be our pick if he is available. I am thinking he is a bigger version of Kelenic.

Just dream of a Kelenic, Julio, Veen outfield....we would finally have a good LF
