Since mixing in the two-seamer, or sinker, Robbie Ray is like a whole new pitcher. This is exactly what I thought he needed to do a month ago, and he did it.
Why was he so resistant to adding new pitches when he was getting lit up for the the first two months of the season? It's not like he had to learn how to throw them, they were already in his arsenal. This makes me wonder what the fuck they have pitching coaches for when obvious solutions takes months to implement.
Well, he won the Cy Young last year with just the 4-seam and the slider, so I imagine the reasoning was that those were his best pitches. You could ask Logan Gilbert why he threw 7 straight fastballs to Mike Trout and he would probably say because the fastball is his best pitch.
