Yeah, I do think it comes from dipoto, I also don't think dipoto pulls it out of his ass either. I seriously doubt Jerry Dipoto does anything simple
So Cal batting second can't be due to higher OBP than Julio?? Has to be something more complicated?

I'm pretty sure Cal prefers batting later in the lineup. I posted this earlier in the thread but nobody responded so i assume you guys regard the sample size as too small to be significant.

Yeah, some guys might be more comfortable hitting leadoff than others, that of course needs to be taken into consideration. And Bonds had a preference where he hit, I remember the stories but that of course was Bonds. Sorry I don't buy looking at splits and then deducing where a guy should hit as if there is something mystical about a guy hitting 200 points higher sixth instead of fifth. I don't believe much in splits to begin with. Its interesting bringing up preparation, and expectation. There seems a lot of discussion here about moving guys up and down the lineup, basically trying to chase if they are hot or not. So and so has been hot for the last three weeks he needs to move up, so and so needs to move down. I do think that goes against the concept of guys feeling comfortable
Like I said, I don't think you were much of an athlete.

I was. David was. Both played baseball at a high level.

I am a former professional golfer.

I cared a lot about where I hit in a lineup. There's things I do on the golf course that a computer can't explain that I feel help boost my performance.
You might feel it boosts your performance but if there isn't a way of actually measuring something then you don't really know if it is or not. Slaughtering a chicken might boost your performance, who knows. If you feel like it does, go for it

absolutely, are you honestly going to argue dipoto isn't going to attempt to apply his beloved analytics to the problem of where a guy should bat in a lineup?

So slaughter the chicken.

An athlete's performance is mostly about belief.

Try quantifying that.

No, I actually think Cal might prefer the 4-hole.

I don't know that it is against his wishes.

I don't think he gets much of a say to be honest. But that is how the game has changed. More analytics, less player mentality. I'm also not sure Cal has earned any say on where he hits in the lineup. It's not like he's been doing this the past 5 years with the bat.

Bonds certainly cared.

I wish they would try a random lineup at least once every seadon. Let someone draw names out of a hat. The team would probably score 10+ runs that game...
