lots of teams were stealing signs, the sign stealing was not the issue, its not about going back seasons, this is what its about...

“I find that the conduct of the Astros, and its senior baseball operations executives, merits significant discipline,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said as part of the ruling. “I base this finding on the fact that the club’s senior baseball operations executives were given express notice in September 2017 that I would hold them accountable for violations of our policies covering sign stealing, and those individuals took no action to ensure that the club’s players and staff complied with those policies during the 2017 postseason and the 2018 regular season.

Manfred gave notice for the sign stealing to stop, and the Astros got caught still doing it, there were probably other teams still doing it too, but it was the Astros that got caught. This is as much about putting all teams on notice of the consequences of not self policing their organizations.

When Luhnow said he didn't know about its probably true, it doesn't matter. This is about teams self policing, organizational control. Its what happened to the Huskies. Its what the IRS does. There is no way the IRS can really monitor tax payers. What they do is grab a cheater every so often and ream them to keep everybody else in line, scare the shit of them. This what Manfred is doing with GMs

There’s no question they were warned to stop, I wasn’t aware that the garbage can banging went on for yrs and pretty sure you didn’t either, I find it upsetting that the Astros who joined our division really cheated this way and it should be investigated thoroughly. There should be no timeline for not penalizing for this behavior To say everybody cheats isn’t exactly true, You have no proof that we banged garbage cans, In fact we probably never get away with that because our stadium has been at about 25% of attendance for awhile. If your Felix, your probably thinking back to those games and wondering, It would be fairly simple for Manfred to go back and see how far back it goes

Manfred has a list of teams he has fined in the last few seasons for electronic sign stealing and he still has the Red Sox to deal with, it was getting pretty rampant. If you are going to go back and investigate the Astros, then you need to investigate all of it and that isn't possible. That is why Manfred laid down the law in that memo. He was saying what was was, but it needed to stop, and again, the Astros got caught not stopping.

I think this punishment will get the point across and it won't happen again. If a team was guaranteed to win a WS by cheating then it might happen again but that is the crazy thing. How many more wins do you think this absurd scheme got them. I wouldn't be surprised if it was zero and would be shocked if was more than three.

Yeah, I don't think they added a bunch of wins or something, I guess that is the issue huh, like they cheated themselves to the WS. I have not followed this that closely, but it was only certain situations it would work. That is how i view it, the Astros were made an example of, and the issue is organizational control

they need to get a handle on the technology, its like PEDs, they are trying to control in game technology, and they need the clubs to cooperate. This is saying, you better cooperate, we are not joking

I don't know man. Seems like a major advantage. All the offspeed stuff is mostly useless if the batter isn't also prepared for a fastball.

True but I would think the hitter would have to be so caught up in listening to the banging it would mess with his natural instincts as a hitter.

it was their home games, and it was certain situations, maybe a majority of them perhaps, but for instance a man on second they couldn't do it. And again, other teams were aware of it, its not like they were being stupid with their signs. It was like that stuff with the Pats. On one hand maybe they were stealing sideline signs, or on the other, teams were using phony ones because it was so silly, them trying to steal them in the first place. Its not like the rest of the teams are a bunch of idiots. Again, other teams were doing it, and i would figure most teams knew to look out for it. Doubt many teams were just dropping i finger for a fast ball, two for a curve or whatever. That is the thing, how really successful was it to begin with

it is odd what they were thinking, maybe they thought it was some kind of joke...sign stealing has been part of the game...it could be they didn't really get anywhere with it, didn't expect it to be taken that seriously

It think it is a case where people get off on thinking they are smarter than everyone else. The thrill of getting away with something. Did a single participant think if they do it they will win the WS and if they don't they have no chance?
