The smart thing would be to sign another starting pitcher, either Tyler Anderson or one of the higher upside guys still left like Rodon. But even just Anderson would give you five legit starting pitchers going into spring, and I'd rather do that than have a question mark at #5 and then an injury happens and all of a sudden you have two question marks.

As for the prospects, Kirby probably is closest in skill and ability, but needs this year to build up innings and stay healthy. Brash is a stud, but prospect people say that his command is in question and he's still working on the change as a third pitch. Williamson is another stud, but I think there may be command issues there as well. Basically, all of these guys need this next year to be as much in the minors as possible. But I wouldn't be surprised if all three get called up at various points. And if you happen to be the religious type, say a few prayers for Emerson Hancock's shoulder. He could be the best of the lot if he can stay on the mound.

Honestly did not think we had a chance at Robbie Ray. I mean, a left-hander that just won the Cy Young, I figured he would want 7/175 or better, and that he would get it. But this deal seems pretty reasonable.
I guess guys will come to Seattle after all.....for the right deal.
Yeah, I hope there's some good reporting on how this went down. I mean, having just won the Cy Young, why would his own team let him go and sign Gausman instead? Maybe he just didn't like Toronto? Not a fan of Tim Hortons?
Who would want to live in Canada if they didn't have to. Talk about absurd income taxes and a country that forced their only MLB team to play in Buffalo for months after every other MLB city came to its senses.

Absolutely, the prudent move would be filling the rotation spot so your prospect gets his chance when another guy inevitably needs time off.

And from there have to ask yourself if you're filling the rotation spot, why not get the best guy you can.

Even Rodon has been talked about as getting a 1 year high value contract.

No reason to expect a #5

Well, as a Canadian expat I have a few thoughts in this.

Ray is from Tennessee. Guessing he agrees with me. I can see why you might not. No place like home.

Well, yes. Home is home. But if you back a truck of money up to someone, you can convince them to move all kinds of places.

High taxes. Yep. But you never, ever see a doctor’s bill. Like, ever. Not an issue if you’re making $5M a year, I suppose. But still.

Low population density. Higher quality of life and longer life expectancy. practically no gun violence. Legal pot nationwide. Second country to legalize same sex marriage. Etc etc.

Hey - not bagging on the US. I choose to live here and love it. But there’s upsides to Canada.

As for the Buffalo thing - had to. Borders were ostensibly closed in both sides at the height of the pandemic. I haven’t seen my parents who are in their mid 80-s in two years. Covid fucking sucks.

Anyhow - not trying to take us down a rabbit hole. Just a few thoughts from someone who lived half their life in the US and half in Canada.

And they have won 2 more World Series than we have. Groan.

Good stuff, thanks for this info.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm ecstatic about Ray.

Any rumors to Seattle being linked to Rodon because I'd be all in on him. Load up on starters then deal from depth. Doesn't mean you still can't add a big FA bat. Say sign Bryant &/or Suzuki then trade for another bat.

I think people people are hoping Chapman returns to his previously injured form.
