In 2004 Ichiro hit .372 and had a 138 OPS+. In 2022 Julio's rookie season he had a 147 OPS+ at age 21. I cannot believe that in 2024 people are still longing for and romanticizing about slappy noodle bat bitches.

Are you familiar with RE24? I've never heard of it. I guess it looks at the situation, a single with men on base is more valuable than a walk. This seems to be how he gets to batting a guy that delivers singles and puts the ball in play 3rd rather than leadoff. A table setter isn't that valuable

So Bliss Rivas and Moore put up 2.9 WAR in ~600 PAs and Young finished the season as an on base machine with pretty good Slug. I think we are good at 2B and shouldn't trade Castillo for a 100-120 OPS+ bat.

3rd base is the black hole. There is literally nobody other than Bregman who might as well cost a trillion dollars.

The problem is that Bregman is the only good 3B on the market this year and next year and next year there is at least Vlad Jr., Josh Naylor, Yandy Diaz. I would rather they pony up a bit more and get Bregman and either Santana or Turner as a stop gap this year and get a 1B next year.

You seriously think they’ll pay for a premium free agent 2 offseasons in a row? I don’t. I think we end up with bottom of the barrel at all positions of need.

Considering Haniger and Garver's $27 million will be off the books next year they can afford it. Sure there is no chance we're going to sign Vlady but Naylor or Diaz could be in our price range. Either way you look at it we can improve the team more by getting a 3B than an incremental upgrade at 1B.

Yeah those guys that score 101 runs, because they are on base, are worthless to a team that wins 69 games....so is a 9.2 WAR player

Here's a topical fangraphs article titled, The Myth of Luis Arreaz. They use RE24 to argue he's basically an average hitter. The argument that singles or average aren't that valuable. It's Looking at last season, hIs doubles were reduced. I don't think TMobile be that kind to him. I understood it's where doubles go to die.

There's something else buried in it I found interesting. He argues Arreasz is a mediocre leadoff hitter. That it be better to hit him 3rd. That a single with the bases empty isn't really very valuable. It be more more valuable delivering singles with men on base. Takes me back to the deal about hitting ichiro 3rd, how everyone thought that was nuts.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-myth-of-luis-arraez/
Arraez is nothing special.

He's just a leadoff hitter that occupies an appropriate position and there aren't many better options available at 2B or 3B, and we need to fill one or the other at least.

Given the lack of available 3B, our best option there would probably be Ty France imo. Outside of Ty France, Moore/Shenton makes the most sense at 3B.

So Arraez is kind of the belle of the ball of what's available.

They think they are so smart in terms of adding guys with just one year left before FA because of payroll flexibility but here we are again for the 4th straight season looking for a 2B and this time around there isn't jack shit available.
