Garrett Crochet extended

The Red Sox extended Crochet for 6 years at $170 million. That works out to $28.3 mil per year. How does this effect signing Gilbert to an extension? How are the two alike? Who is the better pitcher?

Garrett Crochet turns 26 on June 21st.
Logan Gilbert turns 28 on May 5th

Crochet has appeared in 105 games (33 starts) racking up 224 innings of work.
Gilbert has appeared in 122 games, all starts, with 711.1 innings of work.

Crochet blew out his pitching elbow during ST in 2022 and had to have TJ surgery. He lost 2022 and the vast majority of 2023. He has had a small list of other injuries.
Logan Gilbert has had no injuries!

Logan Gilbert has accumulated 9.6 bWAR.
Garrett Crochet has accumulated 5.9 bWAR.

I hate the Red Sox for signing him for that amount of money. It just pushes up the price for extending Gilbert. To me, these two pitchers are very comparable so you have to consider that it may take *at least* $26 million per year to extend Gilbert. I don't think that the M's management has the stones to go that high.

I think its probably about the same as what Logan's value is. The 2025 season was the second year of arbitration for each of them. Logan has a bit longer track record but Crochet is a bit younger and has a bit more upside.

I would say that Logan is a little better now but the 2024 WAR numbers don't agree. Logan pitched 208 Innings with a 3.23 ERA and a 0.887 Whip and only had a 2.8 WAR while Crochet only pitched 146 innings and had a 3.58 ERA and a 1.068 WHIP but some how was worth a 4.1 WAR. Must be a pretty massive ball park adjustment there.

I think Logan goes to FA. The broke bitches can't afford him.

I don't see why one player's contract should affect another player's contract unless you're talking about the best player in the game. That's something that's never made any sense to me and i think it's just something that the media and fans concoct.

I am blown away that Cal signed. I don't know that I would play here unless the money was pretty much double. I felt like they promised Cal something, like this was the last season they'd sit on their hands and not do shit in the off season. But I bet he is seriously doubting his decision right now. This offense is so pathetic. I guess maybe Logan won't want to give up pitching here, but who cares if you are just going to lose 2 to 0 every time out?

It doesn't affect it necessarily. Its just an indication of what teams are willing to pay for a certain level of talent. The Red Sox wouldn't have given Crochet that money if they didn't feel like someone else would outbid them when he got to free agency. For the M's they can look at what Crochet got and use that to make a reasonable projection of what Gilbert might get on the open market.

Yep it is just like Real Estate appraisers looking at comps of recently sold homes in the same area to come up with a valuation.

The Marte trade is quickly looking like another Jerry failure...
