Players who it's a good thing we didn't acquire this past offseason
There were a number of players' names thrown around (and who were definitely available) in this forum with fervor this past offseason, and in some cases we all liked them, but in these cases it's a really good thing we didn't acquire them.
Anthony Santander: dude has gone from hitting 44 bombs last year to 6 so far this year and batting .179. If this holds up it's going to be a top-ten dropoff in MLB history like the one we went through with Jesse Winker. WHEW
Paul Goldschmidt: he's not bad, .776 OPS, but if you did the Yankee Stadium/T-Mobile Park conversion, he'd probably be Ty France 2.0 WHEW
Triston Casas and Masataka Yoshida: Casas got off to a slow start and then suffered a season-ending injury running out a ground ball (which of course doesn't mean he would have gotten hurt in a Mariner uniform), and Yoshida (who's a good hitter) finally just started playing. Meanwhile, it turned out that we really needed Luis Castillo. WHEW
Ryan Mountcastle: man, he SUCKS. .628 OPS. It's not like he was that good in 2024 either. WHEW
Carlos Santana: .688 OPS. So glad he preferred Cleveland. WHEW
Christian Walker: holy shit, a - 0.9 WAR, Houston is the place where great first basemen go to die apparently. WHEW
Yoan Moncada: he's not bad, but he's constantly injured and has only played 36 games this season. WHEW
Alec Bohm: has a .723 OPS but really only has a little more pop than Ben Williamson. WHEW
Nolan Arenado: that guy's done, he would have been the classic one-year-too-late guy that everyone saw coming. WHEW
Gavin Lux: okay hitter, but Gavin Sux on defense. WHEW
Ha-Seong Kim: has only played six games this season. WHEW
Michael Comforto: no idea why this clown's name kept coming up. 8 dingers and hitting .184 WHEW
Now of course, we also threw around names of players that were available that we didn't get who are having good seasons (cough Pete Alonso cough), and some of these players' like Santander's bad seasons have been shocking, but it's probably a good thing we're shlubs on the sofa and not MLB GMs.

What the hell happened with Anthony Santander? I wasn't in favor of signing him, but I sure never expected this kind of drop-off.

I tend to figure injury with dramatic dropoffs. Walker got hit in the hand early in the season, i don't think he even missed any games but i still wonder if there's some sort of nagging injury

And it wasn't even gradual, it was one of those rare things where a guy just out of nowhere forgets how to hit a baseball. Surprisingly, Santander's OPS drop-off of 237 points from last year is less than Jesse Winker's drop-off of 261 points with us in his one year.
Here's something I'll bet nobody ever would have thought: Babe Ruth once had a 316-point OPS drop-off from 1924 to 1925. Apparently he got really fat and sick and "only" put up an OPS of .936. I wonder if 316 is the record for a one-year drop-off.

Same thing happened to Jose Abreu after the Asstros got him, and then in his second year everything fell apart on him.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 6:49 pmChristian Walker, ops+ last four years 125, 122, 120, 83

Santander, Goldschmidt and Arenado are the only ones I remember being slightly interested in. Santana wasn't that good when he was here, and I wasn't all that interested in paying for a father figure for Julio. So? He got what he had coming I guess! LOL

Joc Pederson .508 OPS and -0.8 WAR Whew.

I warned about him. Right that age that hitters implode in this pitching environment.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 6:49 pmChristian Walker, ops+ last four years 125, 122, 120, 83

Certainly not the biggest % drop off though.DavidGee24 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 8:24 pmAnd it wasn't even gradual, it was one of those rare things where a guy just out of nowhere forgets how to hit a baseball.
