I’ll never forget how excited we were to see Dustin called up from the minors.

In fact, that was the highlight of his career, in just a little over half a season, he hit over .270 and had seven triples, spraying line drives all over the place.

Do any of you think that all of the position changes messed up his mind?

Ackley their biggest bust? I don't buy that, look around the league, its not that uncommon for a highly selected player to have a middling career. He put up 8 war, what did Chambers put up?

I agree, he should be at the bottom of that list.

I wonder if there is another MLB team with as many high 1st round draft picks over that period that did virtually nothing in the majors. It's hard to imagine but possible i guess. Maybe the Orioles or Whitesox?

You could add Zunino to the list, at least from an offensive standpoint.

Of the 18 "draft busts" mentioned in the linked article, Evan White was the only one selected after Jerry Dipoto joined the Mariners in 2015.

I think that you have to take expectations into account. Ackley was regarded as the top college hitter with the stats to back it up in a time where you could watch all of his ABs on TV and break them down whereas Chambers was a high-school player in the '70s where they'd have one scout watch a few of his games and write their player ratings down on paper and then mail them to the Mariner front office.

I would bet that just about every franchise is like that. About half the guys drafted in the first round don't even make it to the show, and only a handful end up having solid major league careers. Seriously, just Google any first round draft and you'd be amazed at how many of those players you've never even heard of. I even played ball with a guy (Brian Greer) who was the #8 overall pick in 1977. He had one AB in the show at 18, three at 20, and that's it. https://www.baseball-reference.com/regi ... eer-001bri
