Rich Amaral-My Kind of Mariner!
Rich Amaral-My Kind of Mariner!
This guy could do all the basics, Well, bunt, hit behind the runner, steal, run the bases, play multiple positions, show good range in the outfield.
Hit .276 lifetime!
Had over 300 at bats in 1996, hit .292 with 25 stolen bases!
The Throwback, a 50’s type, unheralded, unselfish player.
Before I retired, I actually had a Rich Amaral baseball card in my office desk.

He had a career WAR of 5.1 which doesn't really jump out at you, but he was really good as a utility player, maybe our second-best ever after Mark McLemore.

The super utility Amaral was on my fave list, too. He paved the way for Willie Bloomquist.Hy Feiber wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2019 3:07 pmThis guy could do all the basics, Well, bunt, hit behind the runner, steal, run the bases, play multiple positions, show good range in the outfield.

Rich's son, Beau Amaral was signed by Seattle and played for the AA Arkansas Travelers in 2018 after 6 years in the Cincinnati farm system. Unfortunately, MLB doesn't appear to ever be a dream realized.
As a 28 year old he's playing for Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League. He has helped them to a 23-10 record with his .311 \ .392 \ .622 \ 1.014 line.
A couple of his teammates south of the border are rhp Jumbo Diaz (6-4, 315 lb) and Junior Lake. Lake was invited to Mariner's 2018 spring training and his Baseball Reference picture shows him with a M's cap on. He has no stats with this team.

Rich was a bottom of the order utility guy on those Mariner teams. There have been several after were he would probably hit third and play every day!
Re: Rich Amaral-My Kind of Mariner!
Another Amaral type, old Henry Cotto, same kind of player!
Great base stealing pct!

I’d put Stan Javier in that list too.DavidGee24 wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2019 6:46 pmHe had a career WAR of 5.1 which doesn't really jump out at you, but he was really good as a utility player, maybe our second-best ever after Mark McLemore.
Gillick didn’t have stellar drafts or trades, where he most excelled was in picking up solid free agents like Olerud, McL, Boone, Javier, various others.

Javier was a good player for us but I don't think he ever played infield.
