Guy's gone from being a 5 1/2 - 6 WAR player to being average. At least it's more than we got out of Figgins.

The nightmare is he's at the beginning of that contract, you can anticipate that kind of drop off later in a contract, wonder if it's changing stadiums

Funny thing about going from Fenway to PetCo is that LF at PetCo isn't a lot farther and even with having moved the fences in there are some big gaps. However, the wind from the bay knocks some distance off of fly balls, PetCo is set up very similar to how T-Mobile is.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Aug 30, 2025 9:01 pmThe nightmare is he's at the beginning of that contract, you can anticipate that kind of drop off later in a contract, wonder if it's changing stadiums

He’s still on the books for $200 million more, through age 40.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Aug 30, 2025 9:01 pmThe nightmare is he's at the beginning of that contract, you can anticipate that kind of drop off later in a contract, wonder if it's changing stadiums
How much motivation does a clown like that have, after 3 nothing years?
Virtually none of these contracts work out for the owners, but as long as they can afford it, they’ll keep signing them up.
As a 50s kid, eventually these insane contracts turned me off to the game.

It was totally foreseeable. Chaim Bloom got raked for letting him go, but he was right. The Rex Sox got the best years of a very good but probably not great player.

The thing is they do work, a lot of the criticism tends to be about players falling off towards the end but that really isn't an issue generally if the player has been productive for the greater share of it. The evidence of these sorts of contracts working is teams keep giving them. And you are correct, they can afford them. Not because of rich owners but because of the kind of money baseball generates. Players get huge contracts because baseball generates huge profitsHy Feiber wrote: ↑Sat Aug 30, 2025 11:33 pmHe’s still on the books for $200 million more, through age 40.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Aug 30, 2025 9:01 pmThe nightmare is he's at the beginning of that contract, you can anticipate that kind of drop off later in a contract, wonder if it's changing stadiums
