The death of the 20 game winner.
The death of the 20 game winner.
Chalk it up to the robotic 100 pitch count.
With more and more starters going just five innings, it’s tougher for the bullpen to hold the lead for four.

Re: The death of the 20 game winner.
I don't think anyone under 70 years old cares about pitcher wins. Has been a meaningless stat for decades...The SPs don't even care anymore.

Re: The death of the 20 game winner.
Even when it was a big deal, it was a flawed stat. If a SP leaves with a lead after 5 innings and the team wins he should get the win.

Quality starts is a far more meaningful stat, but hardly anyone pays attention to it for some odd reason.
Re: The death of the 20 game winner.
I came up with a perfect solution to fix the Win stat and actually make it meaningful and reflect reality.
If the starting pitcher wouldn't get the win by normal standards:
At the end of the game, winning manager picks who gets the win. And then someone else, umpires or opposing manager or team statistician, just has to agree. 10 second process.
So when Logan Gilbert leaves the game in the 7th with a 1-1 tie or even down by a couple, then the Mariners end up winning; instead of whatever reliever happened to be pitching when Mariners took the lead getting the win, give it to Logan.

Either Milikin's way or Dtrain's way would be better.
Reliever wins are useless and pointless imo. All they do is identify who was pitching when the offense took the lead. Win % is more meaningful that Wins alone imo.
The best pitchers for the most part still end up with the most wins. Few losses. No decisions depend a lot on their teams offense. There are sometimes exceptions to that, like Miguel Batista. High ERA, High Wins? That guy only won because of his offense.
I'm not a fan of Quality Starts personally because a "Quality Start" is 3 runs or less with 6+ innings. That means a 4.50 ERA qualifies. Higher than any of our starters besides Castillo. Not much quality about it imo.
Bryce Elder and Foster Graham a good example. They're tied for 12th on the most Quality Starts list.
Elder:
ERA: 4.12
W/L: 5-6
QS:12
Graham-
ERA: 2.77
W/L: 10-2
QS: 12

Doesn't a quality start only mean you made it through 6 innings?Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2026 4:40 amQuality starts is a far more meaningful stat, but hardly anyone pays attention to it for some odd reason.
So, Woo from yesterday, gave up 3 runs through 6 innings, but was behind 0-3. If Cole didn't power up, he would have had the loss.
So you can have a loss, but it's still a quality start?

That's basically what I said and a lot less words. LOLMillikin wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2026 6:29 amI came up with a perfect solution to fix the Win stat and actually make it meaningful and reflect reality.

Yes six Innings and three runs are less.
