Emerson to have wrist surgery

That serms kinda odd to me. I think players are trying to tolerate a fair amount of pain at times. Its an aspect to performance
The current wrist issues initially started in the early days of spring training when Emerson tweaked it during an on-field workout. He eventually went to see Sheridan to get it checked out. Given the option to play through the issue with treatment or have surgery, Emerson quickly declined any procedure. Discomfort in the wrist wasn’t completely new and something he had managed in the past.
Given his workload in the spring while trying to make the opening day roster, Emerson played through some of the discomfort. It continued to linger for much of spring and became an issue after he started the season with Triple-A Tacoma. He received a cortisone shot in the wrist on April 19 and missed five games with the Rainiers. The shot provided temporary relief, but wasn’t going to completely fix the problem.
“My understanding is that a lot of guys deal with this,” Hollander said. “The tendon can get displaced from the sheath of tissue that holds it down. Some guys it affects them more than others … just where the tendon is and what it’s resting on.”
Hollander mentioned that J.P. Crawford, who is also on the injured list, is dealing with a similar issue and recently had an injection in his wrist. Crawford is expected to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday. He worked out pregame on Monday after returning from a three-game rehab assignment with Tacoma.

What's crazy is how Donovan goes on the IL for mosquito bites, but Naylor nearly takes his own head off multiple times with ridiculous slides and stays in the game.
Could you imagine what would happen if Donavan slid face-first into a knee, like Naylor did today? It would probably be a career ender for him.
That said, I can understand why a rookie like Emerson might play through an actual injury just because he wants to prove himself. Hopefully he's not a guy who is always out injured. I look forward to seeing him back next year.

And like the idea that a player is either healthy or injured. That a guy goes on the IR and returns healthy again. Its more degrees of health. Take Cal, hes probably still feeling the effects of his torn muscle. Taking three weeks off didnt mean its gone. We dont really consider it terms of performance and players dont sit around complaining about it. They keep it to themselves

This reads like there's enough history with this issue that the Mariners should be aware of it.

Since signing that fat contract Colt makes an average annual salary of $11,875,000.
That's one expensive surgery. Better be worth it.

I like Emerson, but I'll never understand why they signed him to that contract so soon and with his injury history.

Dipoto had to get some of these kids to sign to justify his not signing players the last five years and pocketing the money instead.
It didn't work with any of the pitchers. Couldn't even get Cooler Killing Kelenic to sign.
Finally got Cal and Emerson to sign so it looked like he'd accomplished something after wasting all those years crying about having no payroll because of the imminent 2026 payroll "crest" when they'd no longer be able to afford to sign the young players to extensions if we had spent on free agents the last few seasons!

Well said. I also think he is desperately trying to prove that the strategy that did not work with Evan White, and wouldn't have worked with JK, is not the wrong move. He is an arrogant asshat, and it doesn't matter how many times he is right, he is going to do it that way until he either gets canned, or it works so he can claim he knew it all along. I imagine he grew up as a kid getting his ass kicked all the time and is now taking it out on us.
