The loser pulling down the winners

Post by Hanjag » Wed May 15, 2019 7:07 am

The positive WAR producers are numerous and there is a bounty of players having high caliber seasons. On offense 6 players are having high-quality seasons 4 have more than 1WAR Haniger, Narvaez, VBach, EE. 1 more has .9 WAR Dee G and finally, Beckham with .6 WAR those are all above average season paces. Healy, Murphy, Santana, Bruce, and Moore have positive WAR totals combined 7 but [Mallex -.7, Shed -.3 BB -.2 and Crawford -.1 take off 1.5 WAR =5.5 WAR

Pitching: The position players have been 115 OPS+ on the year so you expect them to be better. The pitching team ERA+ is only 87 but there are several players having solid or better years. Starters lead the way: [ Kikuchi 1.4, Marco G 1.3 Brendan Brennan has been the BP standout .8, Leake will be near or better than that before his win tonight .7 WAR Those four have 4.2 + WAR, There are contributors Sadzeck .5 to Rosscup .1 another 1.5 so 5.7 in WAR but 13 pitchers have negative WAR from -.1 WAR (Festa) to -.4 (Swarzack) total -3.2 WAR.down to 2.5

17 players - 4.7 WAR, if they were just zeros the M's WAR would go from 8 to 12.7 that is 5 wins already.

So current 22-23 the M's no losers team would look like 27-18 tied with the Yanks for 1st WC. with a 3 and 2.5 game lead over the Redsox, and Indians. The Rays, and Twins are currently leading the Central and East divisions.

Add an ace on top of Kikuchi, Marco, get Tui, Altavilla, Bautista, Strickland up and healthy to add to the 5 good relievers. This team could compete with the elite teams.

Don't forget Elias at 0.8. LeBlanc will help when he returns and Felix being out until the AS break won't hurt.

The bigger deal will be getting back a few relievers and possibly Seager who should improve the defense.

It's really hard to count on Altavilla's return as a positive too..he is injury prone, and has been inconsistent at best. There's no guarantee either that Tui or Strickland will contribute positively to Mariner things ever, and the jury's out on Batista.

Bottom line for me is that no matter what the numbers say, my gut tells me that even adding an ace leaves us considerably behind Houston, Boston, Tampa, Oakland, Cleveland and I guess it's time to add Minnesota.
As a body we are alone, as a soul never.
