Bill Buckner was testament to the fact that one’s long-lived and consistent greatness can nonetheless be overshadowed by a momentary lapse.

Is that true? His career OPS of .729 isn't too good for a corner outfielder and 1st baseman, but he was an above average defensive outfielder and an average 1st baseman.

That was after the Sox had won two World Series and their petulant, entitled fan base had gotten over the 1986 World Series.

I am flabbergasted that he only had a .729 OPS but he had a terrible walk rate of less than 4.5% and never hit more than 18 HRs in a season. Those were the days when people didn't care about OBP or OPS and he had a good career BA of .289 and had a lot of hits so..............

His OPS+ of 100 was precisely average.

Very sad news. One of my favorite players of all time. Sounds like he had quite a struggle towards the end. RIP Billy Buck.

On Sunday, the last full day of Bill Buckner's life, 16 major leaguers struck out at least three times. Buckner played 22 seasons and never did it once.

22 seasons and racked up 15 WAR, that is getting everything out of your God given talent i guess...
