No idea why we would waste a second or a single dollar on a 36 yo reliever that had a 4.75 ERA last season in a tank year but whatever.

Agreed. In a season where they are basically evaluating who's going to be part of the "core" going forward, why wouldn't they just throw out a bunch of younger guys and let them sink or swim. I think signing Hirano could be for 2 things- 1. provide a veteran leader for the younger player and/or 2. Help Kikuchi.

I wonder how exactly is he going to "help" Kikuchi? Are they going to do the snatch-the-pebble trick from Kung Fu? I just don't get that logic. Do they figure Kikuchi is lonely, and having another Japanese pitcher to talk to will make him better?

Yeah but we already had our quota of one. Maybe this will allow them to can KK's interpreter and save a few beans that way.
