8/18 Mariners Sniffing 9 Games Over, Again vs. Rangers Game Thread

The Mariners have now gone 6-2 since their four game losing streak, again looking at being 9 games over .500 with a win on Wednesday.

The problem with holding Graveman at the deadline and acquiring at least another bat is that while we were just 1 game out the last time we were 9 games over, this time the teams around us in the standings improved so what once was 1 game out at 9 games over is now more like 3.5 games back.

We would have had to get even better just like the:
Yankees (Gallo, Rizzo),
Red Sox (Schwarber, Sale),
Rays (Cruz),
Blue Jays (Berrios, Dickerson, Hand),
A's (Marte)

Wasn't an easy path, even to the one game playoff.

Anyways, the players have the opportunity the rest of the season to prove whether they belong in the 2022 discussion, or not. Go M's!

Except for they would have won 3 or 4 more games if they held on to Graveman and Chargois. They've had 3 blown saves and also lost a game that they were tied in and gave up runs in both the 9th and the 10th.

Few games they were only in because of Toro so 🤷‍♂️

They picked up a solid starter Anderson and he ius something.
JT was valued and really started to perform well as the "Fireman" coming in and shutting the door in the 5th-6th inning when the starter would leave with runners on. That trade is basically a wash but I like them both.

Tonight marked the 1st time the M's had the 1st 7 hitters all over a .700 OPS that is basically having 7 100 OPS+ or better hitters. 1 of the better ones is Toro.

Adding Anderson gives the expectation that all 5 starters should be 100 ERA+ or better the rest of the way.

The BP is still good. Losing Gravey is :o ing but I think we are better on paper and if they recapture the poassion with a better cast? It is really important to take the next step forward with this club. It will be interesting to see how they continue to play. There maybe 40 some games left until the playoffs but the M's need to be playing everygame like it was a playoff game each series needs to be treated as a playoff series. That means grinding on pitchers fouling of pitches. That means hitting a deep fly ball with runners on 3rd <2 outs.

Interesting to see how it plays out.

Name one.
There isn't a game they won that they would have lost without his bat. he hit Home runs in two games that we lost and his 3rd home run was a solo shot in a game we won by 2 runs. He has 8 RBI 6 of which came in losses 1 was the a fore mentioned solo homer in the 4-2 game and the 8th RBI came in a 9-3 win. He has scored 11 runs. 4 of those came in losses, and the rest came in wins of 9-5, 8-2 4-2 and 2-0.

Being in position to win in 4-2 and 2-0 games seem pretty important.

If you want to act like his bat didn't help a few games, be my guest

Name one, lol. Insurance runs matter until they don't right. Or, don't matter, until they do..

So we are altering the roster but the games are going to unfold exactly the same up to the point where we can insert Graveman back on the roster again to get the save... okay

Someone else gets The Butterfly Effect. If Toro isn't in the lineup, somebody else is, and the lineup probably gets altered. Once one thing unfolds differently (an out turning into a hit and vice versa), the game very possibly ends up with a different result.

We are 64-56 in 120 games, almost 3/4 of the season behind us. We have 42 games remaining... if we continue at this pace we would win 23 games to give us 87. I think we need 90 or 91 to get into a wild card. To win 90 we need to win 26 out of 42 and that would be 26-16 the rest of the way or ten over in the final quarter. Pretty doubtful, imo... but it's a matter of the defense and pitching remaining solid, and a couple of guys catching fire with the bats...We either go on a couple 5 game win streaks or keep winning every series.... What's in the tank? I don't know....

Really simplistic conclusion. You can say they might of or probably would have but can't guarantee it. Millions of factors involved. No way to guarantee that with access to the alternate universe.
