Seager Option

This article places Kyle Seager as tied for second best 3b free agent option behind a Borass client Bryant.
I get that everyone wants a trade for Ramirez but I seriously doubt Dipoto will give up the expensive talent it would require.
I expect and hope that Seager gets one more year here. I know the AL West will hate that for sure.
The twenty million is relatively close to what we spent this year on him so why create another hole we have to fill?
Why not take the 3b problem out of the equation and concentrate on upgrading elsewhere?
How easy is it to replace 35 Hr's and 100 rbi's at a reasonable price?
I guess we will find out soon enough.

I think its looking more and more likely that that is what happens. It gives them more flexibility moving forward because it buys some time to see exactly how the young infielders shake out. If you go out and get a decent 3b in FA you are going to lock the position up for multiple years and eliminate that as a possibility for either Toro or France. By signing Seager you can continue to Let the young infielders develop and decide if you want to keep them and if so at what positions.

What do you guys think of FGs valuation of 1 WAR = $8M? Still valid.
He is currently at $21.4M if so. But does he put up 2.5 WAR next season to be worth the $20?

Well said. I believe at this time, Seager is the best option available to us. And if we decide to move France over there, we'd still be paying around $20 million for a 1B FA. so why not re-up Seager to occupy 3B for at least another year?

Drop him in the Batting Order.....Getting Jose Ramirez is a "pie in the sky dream", but he's a real leader, and a really tough AB.... One move we really could make is to replace Murphy at catcher...

He may not but I think I am saying what are better realistic options to replace Seagers WAR?
We know what we have and we control that, we can't control free agents or trades so this might be a " bird in the hand" situation for one more year.
Btw has anyone noticed how much fun he seems to be having lately? He's joking around and smiling at umps and opposing players, it looks to me like he is really enjoying this fight to the finish.

I remember only a about a month ago people on here was very much against picking up Seagers option. Glad many are coming around to the idea. He's been the heart of the offense during this surprising run. If this year didn't go the way it did we wouldn't even be considering this idea.

this is what I have been suggesting, turn it into an extension, if he isn't interested then look elsewhere
Using 2021 salaries, $20MM would put Kyle Seager tied for Alex Bregman (HOU, $20MM, 2.1 fWAR) for 5th highest paid third baseman. Other players in this salary range include Josh Donaldson (MIN, $23MM, 1.9 fWAR), Matt Carpenter (STL, $19.5MM, -0.2 fWAR), and Kris Bryant (SF, $19.5MM, 3.9 fWAR). Given Kyle Seager’s fWAR of 2.6, it becomes increasingly clear that $20MM is too steep for the Mariners to pay out.
Before everyone goes screaming “Kyle Seager was done dirty by the Mariners after committing 10 years to this team and city”, the following is how I think the Mariners front office should handle Seager’s option:
The front office should go to Seager and inform him that they do not intend to pick up his option, but that they’d like to extend him a 2-year, $26MM contract. This type of offer demonstrates a continued commitment to him and his family, and allows the Mariners fan base to enjoy what would likely be his final contract. If he were to decline and look for higher pay elsewhere, the Mariners could then take that $20MM and go after a Kris Bryant.

We have 5 guys that can play 3B. (France, Toro, Moore, Padlo, Torrens)
The sole purpose of the offseason should be adding the best bat(s) they can. They're in a unique position that it doesn't really matter what position they play, it will be the same supporting cast.
Replacing Seagers production at 3B would be expensive. Moving an im-house option to 3B and adding the bat somewhere else could save many millions.
They can sign a 3B and it's still Toro, Crawford and France around them.
They can sign a 2B and it's still Toro, Crawford and France around them.
They can sign a 1B and it's still Toro, Crawford and France around them.
They could even sign a SS and it would probably still be Toro, Crawford and France around them.
What defensive position they play seems pretty irrelevant. Get the best bat. Seager is one of the best available at 3B. He's nowhere near the top of the list when you include 1B's, 2B's and SS's, which they should.
