Montgomery lost his chance to be a hero and became less than a zero for frying the bullpen with his short outing. The Yankees managed 4 basehits while the Tampa Bay Rays blistered 19 hits. The Rays have no .300 hitters, their highest averaged player is a rookie, Wander Franco, but they do have an unheralded 2nd baseman on the cusp of a 40 homer 100 RBI season, they have a catcher now playing first base that had a 50 game hitting streak in the minors. They came into Yankee Stadium tired and could have been swept and nothing would have changed for them.... they had nothing really to play for but to rest their players and get ready for the playoffs.
