I had made a way to early guess at who had to be protected and roster prior to forum post being lost. I couldn’t find it but this is close to what I had. Be curious if the roll Dice in Carlson. I protected Carlson and placed both Lijay and Margevicious on waivers to Tacoma

What Doyle said
Rule 5 primer for Seattle. Guessing 36 guys are guaranteed to be tendered a contract. 7 more fighting for last 4 spots. Think Marcus Wilson is gone.
Ray Kerr gets protected. Sam Carlson, Devin Sweet, Joe Rizzo, etc unprotected.
Orange on chopping block w/offseason acquisitions.

They won't protect Darren Mc.
Carlson had a really rough go way down in low A. Zero chance he would get picked.

I would protect Carlson and Sweet over Newsome and McCaughan. Neither of the latter two have much major league potential in my opinion. Sweet is pretty fringy too, but there's some potential there. Carlson hadn't pitched in 3 years, which makes this season a win for him.

Also, if you take a look Carlson's peripheral numbers you might conclude his season was a bit better than his ERA would suggest. And Modesto was supposedly a terrible defensive team, which when you think about it was probably a good experience for a young pitcher to have to go through.

I would certainly protect Carlson befor Lijay And Margevicious. We know would they offer and McChauchin or sweet would be comps to them, soft tossers with spin. Carlson is exactly what a bottom feeder would look for. Hard thrower young and been injured, hide in BP for year and you may have a beautiful gem

Of course but nobody is going to pick him in the Rule 5 draft

Hopefully will be acquiring a bunch of guys that we have to protect before the Rule 5 draft. If there's still room for Carlson sure why not but if it's a crunch you don't need to protect him.

Doyle left off Ryan Weber. He gets cut like Marcus Wilson. This shows 24 pitchers and 19 position players left.
I cut Margevicus, Newsome, and Haggerty. I make other cuts when I sign some FAs.
I wait to add Ray Kerr, only until the Rule 5 deadline, unless there is some rule about becoming a minor league free agent. This leaves a temporary spot open.

I don't see this as a crunch.... there's plenty of guys we can chop off...McCaughan, Margevicus, Newsome, and Haggerty. We can DFA Long, Bauers, Walton, Godoy, even Fletcher, Trammell, and Walton as far as I'm concerned. None of those guys is gonna lead us to the playoffs.
