I doubt he only weighs 150 now. They had Julio at 180 until just this last year. Will be yet another interesting arm to watch next season.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 7:14 pmWhoa, this kid just won Cal player off the year. Look at that K rate. And he only weighs a buck fitty!

Why did we not notice him THIS season? I guess people were focused on Carlson and Morales...Juliooooo wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 8:32 pmI doubt he only weighs 150 now. I think he was just steady. 3.4 didn't jump out at you, and he has a career 4.94 ERA. He's 22 in low A and hasn't been remarkable before this year.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 8:37 pmWhy did we not notice him THIS season? IOW he 2 years older than Morales in the same league, and had a 3.63 ERA. Not really anything to get too excited about

Its his K rate for a starter that caused my excitement but yeah not young for that league. Good point there.Juliooooo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2022 12:25 amI think he was just steady. 3.4 didn't jump out at you, and he has a career 4.94 ERA. He's 22 in low A and hasn't been remarkable before this year.

Who knows what happened with him. Maybe he got a growth spurt and gained some weight and velo. Maybe he gained a little control (still BBs a lot for a 22 yo at 4.2 BB/9). He won the poy because he was good, but not good enough to get promoted. With that K rate, he could at least be someone they look at converting to a reliever of he doesn't start walking fewer guysD-train wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 7:14 pmWhoa, this kid just won Cal player off the year. It's hard to tell on these pitchers that were putting up less than 5 innings per start, although for August he went over 5 innings per start but his ERA was meh.D-train wrote: ↑Fri Nov 11, 2022 11:35 amIts his K rate for a starter that caused my excitement but yeah not young for that league. He's eligible for the Rule 5. It's very unlikely that he gets selected. So it seems like Berroa, Campbell, and Marlowe will be protected.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Nov 10, 2022 8:37 pmWhy did we not notice him THIS season? Re: Mariners minors. Thread for interesting news and stats.
He's pretty far down the prospect food chain. Baseball America added him to the Mariners Top 30 at #30 for their midseason update. Here is the blurb:
August Update: Hernandez has been a breakout starter at Low-A Modesto with a fastball up to 94 mph and a slider that flashes the ability to be a swing-and-miss pitch. Hernandez is old for the level and lacks wipeout stuff, but he has enough to potentially be a long reliever.
