It's not about not picking somebody, it's about picking somebody. What is so wrong about the Ford pick. I don't mind comparisons to Edgar
Re: Harry Ford tracker
I don't think he will hit MLB pitching and I think Watson will. Pretty simple.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:27 pmIt's not about not picking somebody, it's about picking somebody. What is so wrong about the Ford pick. I don't mind comparisons to Edgar

What you basing that on exactly, have you watched either of them play?
Re: Harry Ford tracker
True, and the thing about Ford was he was a high schooler whose bat may never develop.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:21 pmThe thing with Hultzen is that there were already indications he was a higher than normal injury risk.bpj wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 8:59 pmMuch like Rendon being available when they selected Hultzen, many thought it was a bad pick from the start.
Which, I'm sure, is why tracking the progress from the "obvious" pick and the Mariners prom king pick is worth doing.
You don't have to be opposed to everything somebody says just to be opposed to it you know...

Performance.
Watson is #25 and Ford #92 in the MLB top 100 list so I am not alone.

Watson was a candidate to go No. 1 overall to the Pirates on a below-slot bonus as well as a consensus top-10-pick talent last July, but he dropped all the way to the Marlins at No. 16 when his signability became a factor due to the slide. Miami signed him for $4,540,790, the largest bonus it has ever given a high-school position player. The potential five-tool shortstop collected five extra-base hits and four steals in nine games before a hamstring injury cut his pro debut short.
Listed at just 5-foot-9 and 178 pounds, Watson plays much bigger than that at the plate thanks to an abundance of bat speed and a take-no-prisoners left-handed stroke. He gets to most of his plus raw power and makes consistent hard contact despite his aggressive mentality. He likes to turn the bat loose but controls the strike zone well and will take walks when pitchers decline to challenge him.
Watson is an explosive athlete who can use his well-above-average speed to wreak havoc on the bases. He has all the attributes needed to play a solid shortstop, including smooth actions, range to both sides, arm strength and keen instincts, and he just needs to develop consistency that should come with experience. With his offensive upside and his tools, he's capable of playing almost anywhere on the diamond and profiling well there.

How many first round picks in baseball history drafted out of HS didn't hit .300 in HS.
Its like when France hit .400 in AAA. Yeah totally different league but if a guy hits .400 in AAA you know he is going to be a good big league hitter, if a kid can't even hit .300 in HS you have to wonder. Most top prospects hit about .500 in HS.

Hitting a baseball thrown by MLB pitchers is such a specialized and rare skill that can't remotely be taught. Being able to hit is mandatory, athleticism is a bonus.

He was supposedly a consensus top 10 pick by graders that aren't actually in baseball organizations. The mariners passed on him at 12 as did Farhan Zaidi at 14. I just don't see it as a crime against humanity. Again, I don't see what's wrong with the Ford pick. As far as I know he will be able to hit ML pitching.
