I hope you are right but I will be a little surprised.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:56 pmHe was supposedly a consensus top 10 pick by graders that aren't actually in baseball organizations. The mariners passed on him at 12 as did Farhan Zaidi at 14. I just don't see it as a crime against humanity. Again, I don't see what's wrong with the Ford pick. As far as I know he will be able to hit ML pitching.

Suddenly batting average is what's important? What happened to obp and slugging?D-train wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:49 pmHow many first round picks in baseball history drafted out of HS didn't hit .300 in HS.
Its like when France hit .400 in AAA. Yeah totally different league but if a guy hits .400 in AAA you know he is going to be a good big league hitter, if a kid can't even hit .300 in HS you have to wonder. Most top prospects hit about .500 in HS.

He got on base at a .510 clip, slugging .539 with a 1.049 OPS in his high school career. He reached base safely in 30 of 33 games in his senior season.

Yep. That's the tradeoff when you draft a high school player. Higher upside but a lower floor.bpj wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:41 pmTrue, and the thing about Ford was he was a high schooler whose bat may never develop.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:21 pmThe thing with Hultzen is that there were already indications he was a higher than normal injury risk.bpj wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 8:59 pmMuch like Rendon being available when they selected Hultzen, many thought it was a bad pick from the start.
Which, I'm sure, is why tracking the progress from the "obvious" pick and the Mariners prom king pick is worth doing.
You don't have to be opposed to everything somebody says just to be opposed to it you know...
Re: Harry Ford tracker
Yep, though I think Watson is the rare HSer with a pretty high floor as well.

Re: Harry Ford tracker
Yes, I think so too. Watson, Brady House, Marcelo Mayer, and Jordan Lawlar all have pretty no-doubt bats, or less risky ones anyway. After those four you had Ford and Benny Montgomery that were both athletes enough to be consensus first round, but not as much consensus on the hit tool. Ford does have the super-elite bat speed though.
Re: Harry Ford tracker
I just looked it up and there were actually 10 HS position players drafted in the first 30 picks last year. That's pretty crazy. History shows that most won't become major leaguers, but of course every team is sure the guy they drafted will. MLB draft is pretty crazy.
Re: Harry Ford tracker
He also has a discerning eye and a great walk rate. On a stand alone, I don't hate the pick but man compared to Watson I don't think it will end well.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 10:39 pmYes, I think so too. Speaking of HS busts, guessing the Royals and Bubba Starling both wish he would have played QB for Nebraska like most thought he would in 2011.GL_Storm wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 10:44 pmI just looked it up and there were actually 10 HS position players drafted in the first 30 picks last year. Man if any of those 13 GMs that passed on him had picked Jose Fernandez he is still alive.D-train wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:18 pmlol even this oneDonn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 8:37 pmThough id rather not spend Ford's entire career second guessing the pick. I don't see it as unreasonable for whatever reasons they picked him. You can go through every draft second guessing picks

Been pretty wild to have White at first and Ford at catcher, both with plus speed, Terry's wet dream
