Optimum late August 26-man roster for M's

Post by Vogelbomb » Wed Aug 03, 2022 9:48 pm

With all the additions and all the injured players set to return, I know we're all thinking about the 26-man roster crunch. So I did a little crunching and came up with what I would do for the Mariners 26-man if I were Dipoto. Going to be some tough calls here before the rosters expand in September. (Note: I can't remember the rules that were put into place for Sept. roster expansion, I want to say there's a cap at 15 pitchers but I could be wrong.)

Position players (14):
Infielders
Ty France
Adam Frazier
JP Crawford
Eugenio Suarez
Carlos Santana
Jake Lamb
Sam Haggerty

Catchers (2)
Cal Raleigh
Curt Casali

Outfielders (5)
Jesse Winker
Mitch Haniger
Julio Rodriguez
Kyle Lewis
Taylor Trammell

Pitchers (12):
Starters (5)
L. Castillo
Gilbert
Ray
Kirby
Flexen

Bullpen (7)
D. Castillo
Munoz
Borucki
Sewald
Swanny
Boyd
Festa

backup at SS? Sam Haggerty or Geno Suarez.
Where does Marco go? No options so IL
Optioned? D.Mo, Kelenic, Murfee, Brash, Toro
DFA? Torrens, Jankowski

I don't see them dropping to 12 pitchers. The bullpen is already overworked as is. I could see Flexen moving back and forth between the pen and the rotation as a swing man to help keep Kirby's innings in check.

They could do that. This was just my take on the optimum 26-man prior to September expansion. This is what I would do.

The team definitely faces a fascinating quandry with the rotation, who to dismiss. It should be Marco if we're just looking at performance (which, frankly, is all we should be looking at). Problem is, Marco doesn't have any options and we are now locked out of trades. I think you run him out there one more time and then find an injury to put him on the IL

We just got another starter because we need depth and don't want to fatigue Kirby. The schedule is getting easier and Marco can eat innings to make it easier on the pen. Marco should be traded in the offseason though
The poster formerly known as Kingfelixk. With a new forum comes a new boardname. Julio is my guy, plus we share a birthday, so that's Culiooooo

The only difference between mine and Vogelbomb's other then the August 10th vs. late August additions of Castillo and Boyd is he keeps Santana and I keep Marco.
