I like Castillo, I wanted the M's to trade JK for him. I'll root for Castillo to be the best pitcher in the majors, now that the M's have him.

I haven't looked at the Montas return. Have you? I wonder what it would have taking from our system relative to that.

FWIW ZiPS projects 2023 and 2024 WAR of 2.9 and 2.6 for J.P. Crawford and 2.5 and 2.4 for Dansby Swanson, who is a year older than Crawford:Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 7:25 amI would go after Xander and Swanson hard! Book it.Coeurd’Alene J wrote: ↑Sun Aug 07, 2022 8:53 pm
Jerry such a cutting edge baseball guru…..He totally nailed the JP is our Shortstop last winter. Just a brilliant monetary masterpiece

For years teams would overpay a free agent coming off a career year. That happens less frequently these days.
Dansby Swanson is having a fabulous 2022 season. However, a short year ago Swanson posted 3.4 fWAR and 1.9 bWAR in 160 games while J.P. Crawford posted 3.3 fWAR and 3.8 bWAR in 160 games:

Someone will give Xander more money than his current player options, which is why he's likely to opt out. Idk how much I love his 9 homers tho. His slugging is way down this year. Trea Turner's 18 bombs on the other hand...Juliooooo wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 1:03 pmHe has a players option this year I believe.
It's probably a moot point. Turner and Boegarts aren't signing here to play 2nd base and the M's are too stupid to not move JP to 2B.
Aaron Judge on the other hand... I'd sell my first born for him to be manning RF next year.
Re: Mariners can't hit at T-Mobile game thread (Ms vs Angels)
We will definitely need a RF but won't be surprised if they go with TT or God forbid JK again if he goes on a 3-11 with a walk three game hitting streak the last week of the season.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 4:37 pmSomeone will give Xander more money than his current player options, which is why he's likely to opt out. JK needs a new organization and we need a break from watching him.

Doesn't make sense to move JP to second, you ruin his value and he be an even bigger hole in the lineup then he is at SS
Re: Mariners can't hit at T-Mobile game thread (Ms vs Angels)
Yep would need to trade him which would bring the overly sentimental portion of fan base to its knees.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 7:03 pmDoesn't make sense to move JP to second, you ruin his value and he be an even bigger hole in the lineup then he is at SS

True, but the problem is starting next year he's making $11M+ per season which would currently be about 10% of the M's total payroll.Bil522 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 12:14 amThe biggest problem with JP is that he is totally miscast as a 5 hole hitter....or any kind of top of the rotation hitter. He needs to be placed in the 8 or 9 hole and just left down there. Heck a .260ish hitter down there would be a Godsend from the past 3 years of .160 hitters.bpj wrote: ↑Sun Aug 07, 2022 11:17 pmBeing ranked 14th is perfectly fine, unless you're trying to make the playoffs.harmony wrote: ↑Sun Aug 07, 2022 10:15 pm
This year J.P. Crawford ranks 12th among qualified shortstops with a wRC+ of 106:

Since the start of the 2021 season Crawford ranks 14th among qualified shortstops with a wRC+ of 104:
https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx? ... &sort=18,d
The average wRC+ for all position players is 100.
JP didn't become a problem until they extended him and assured him a spot even though he's clearly becoming one of our weak links in year one, even though he's pretty much being what he's always been, ok.
On a playoff team there are only so many moves you can make to add even marginal improvement. JP having a contract assures him a spot, even though it's one of the easiest/biggest improvements they could make.
It's like a problem that's not a problem except that it's kind of a problem. They committed to average and paid for it. Just an odd move. Like giving Evan White a contract.
White, with a .361 OPS in AAA this season before they made up whatever is now wrong with him as an excuse.
Not many 8/9 hitters making that kind of cheese.
At the moment the average cost per player on the Mariners ($104M total payroll / 26 man roster) is $4M per player.
In that case JP represents almost 3x the average going forward unless payroll is significantly increased. Pretty sketchy imo.
