Baseball Trade Values gives J.P. Crawford ($38.2 million) slightly more surplus trade value than Nick Hoerner ($35.5 million):ice99 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 10:43 pmThe 2018 24th overall pick? trade values says its an overpay but I am sure JPs value will come down significantly at the end of the season.ice99 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 10:43 pmThe 2018 24th overall pick? Amazingly JP was the 16th overall pick in 2013.ice99 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 10:43 pmThe 2018 24th overall pick? It's got to be more than that.D-train wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 10:39 pmMaybe a trade with the Cubs for Nico Hoerner. JP + Flexen JP into their currently 26th ranked Rotation.

Well, they don't have a reason to update the btv page, but Nico's value is based upon playing 2B (shown on their page). The trade isn't going to work once it's updated to Nico as a SS, sans a drop in Nico's offense or defense.D-train wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 11:20 pmtrade values says its an overpay but I am sure JPs value will come down significantly at the end of the season.ice99 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 10:43 pmThe 2018 24th overall pick? That was great piece and not just because I agree with it. Very thorough and cover the whole roster and the absurdity of them still being hyper focused on payroll.harmony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 11:51 pmA timely (if misguided ) contribution from MLB Trade Rumors:

They're not going to sign Trea Turner or Judge, lol.D-train wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 12:02 amThat was great piece and not just because I agree with it. Re: Mariners can't hit at T-Mobile game thread (Ms vs Angels)
They got JP for Segura when Segura was almost 29. JP will be 28 in 2023, his time at shortstop is dwindling anyways.harmony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 10:18 pmWhat shortstop upgrade from J.P. Crawford could the Mariners land, for example, in a trade of Marco Gonzales or Chris Flexen?bpj wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 9:48 pmI wouldn't touch Swanson, but Trea Turner would be worth a look at this point, I don't care how much money they save or lose (they're clearly not reinvesting savings into the roster so why should I), we need improvement where it's available.
The Mariners have already passed on at least 5 solid trade/free agent candidates because they had JP, it's not like it was JP or Swanson from the get-go.
They need to trade some fluff this offseason. I'd trade Marco and Flexen and sign a guy like Rodon. We have enough guys who can fill the 5 spot, might as well add to the top, again.
Plenty of ways to come up with a quality shortstop (in a Marco or Flexen deal, for example) is what I'm getting at. But, now we know they won't because JP's locked up.
I don't think the conversation needs to be limited to which SS they could add in a specific trade for Marco/Flexen/JP. It could be more than one move, don't be simple.
They could trade JP and Flexen for some prospects to fill the farm back up a little. Trade them to a team that wants JP as a utility/backup SS and values Flexen/Marco as an innings eater.
The Indians and Royals, imo, would eat up a trade for "cheap" controllable pitching like Flexen and Marco. They're both in between, need to add to the MLB team, but can only part with prospects that are blocked by guys like Ramirez or Perez.
Then turn around and fill your only remaining holes in free agency (SS/COF/DH/SP3), and you're barely above past payroll levels (about $175M) with no holes and no "meh" players, and a stronger minor league system.
