Kelenic back with the M’s
Re: Kelenic back with the M’s
Here is the AB for JK's double earlier today. That's pitch number 5 on the outside edge of the strikezone, a slider at 85.8 mph with 34 inches of vertical break, and 3 inches horizontal, so not a sweeper.
I don't think he's hit too many pitches in this location, period, in MLB. But like I was saying upthread, he's started to get to these more often the last couple months in AAA. His plate coverage is better. That it's a slider is even better, IMO, because he needs to change the scouting report teams have on him.

What dipoto had to say
. “In the time that he was back in Tacoma, what we saw was a major shift in his swing decisions. And when I say swing decisions, the pitches he was choosing to swing at and what he was choosing to walk by, how much more discerning he was. And that was the biggest challenge from a baseball skill development perspective that was in front of Jarred, and this was the most meaningful improvement that we’ve seen him make.”

He showed that during his walk in his first PA vs. the A's.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 1:31 pmWhat dipoto had to say

He still may ending up being a bust, but I'm in the camp of keeping our potential five tool lottery ticket. Dumping him in the offseason will likely not bring back someone with equal upside. If he tanks, he tanks.... we can live with that.

I won't be disappointed if they keep him.MarinerFan4Life wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:56 pmHe still may ending up being a bust, but I'm in the camp of keeping our potential five tool lottery ticket. The Mariners bowed to the pressure before the kid had done anything and brought him to the major leagues.
This time when he was brought up should have been Kelenics first look at MLB. I don't fault Kelenic, I hope he can put it all together. As David Gee pointed out though, it's not very common to come back and have any kind of career after starting like Kelenic did.

So far so good. If he does turn the corner it would be in less PAs then it took Jose Ram. to finally turn the corner. Hoping for the best.

Re: Kelenic back with the M’s
exactly! and he's exceptionally cheap for a potential 5-tool stud. You can keep him as depth at the very least. Costs you nothing but a AAA roster spot next yr (last option) then costs you just a bench spot in 24 and beyond (if he doesn't prove out to be a reg starter by then)MarinerFan4Life wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:56 pmHe still may ending up being a bust, but I'm in the camp of keeping our potential five tool lottery ticket. Looking through his AB's the last few days and today, it seems like he's a different hitter than before. I do wish he would be more selective on the first pitch though. Obviously, you can't take that pitch every time, but if a pitch is borderline, he should probably go ahead and take it and if it's a called strike then okay.
