I have been dreaming of the M’s making a run at Judge for a while now. But there is no way the Yankees are letting him walk. Management would be tarred and feathered if they didn’t back a truck of money up to resign him. That said, the M’s can likely afford one splashy FA signing, but Judge ain’t it. Nor is Ohtani whose skills are fungible. Whoever signs him to 10+ year contract will regret it when his hips give out or he pulls an oblique or throw out his shoulder and he begins his rapid decline.

So what can the M’s do? I think we can actually do more with FAs now than ever before. We are clearly a team on the rise, and we are legit contenders in the AL west. Extending Castillo, together with possessing one of the best pitching rotations in baseball and a fantastic core of young players galvanizes this. I think more players would consider Seattle as destinations than at any time in recent history.

I think we need at least 1 OF. Kelenic has been impressive the last few games, but I’m not confident it’s not a hiccup. I love Mitch, but he’s struggling, he’s on the IL more than he’s in the lineup and he’s on the wrong side of 30. Kyle has shitty knees and hasn’t done much since his 2020 season. Winker is…well, sucking. So, let Mitch walk and see what we can get in trade for some combination of Winker/Kelenic/Lewis. I think Bryan Reynolds or Kyle Schwarber are doable. Schwarber can DH and play 1B too.

Our biggest IF need is 2B. If Dipoto can get over his bromance with JP and force him to 2B our options open up. We can get spendy if we do that, and we could lock in a top tier SS. My guess is Correa opts out, and he’s my first choice. If we want to get really stupid spendy, Trea Turner. Dansby Swanson might be an affordable FA option on a short contract.

If Dipoto could pull off some of his magic, a trade for switch hitting Tommy Edman would be a dream, but there’s no way that’s happening. Nice to dream.

Not sure Bell is the answer. His stint in San Diego has been unspectacular, and we have France doing good stuff at 1B and White on a contract that will have the M’s wondering what to do when he finally gets healthy. If we need a DH, maybe sign JD Martinez to a 1 year deal, or…..and here’s something totally out there…bring Daniel Vogelbach back as a left hitting DH. Dude has some pop but can’t hit lefties. He has a 1.2 WAR and a .430 SLG this year. Platoon him with Ty.

Anyhoo, just some thoughts.
Yes, I see some blogs putting out $300 million contracts for Judge. We'll see what happens.

Here is still my hope and I don't care what it takes. The M's should be all in for 2023. Make a splash and simply add quality, cost-effective options at DH and 2B.

1. Julio Rodriguez CF
2. Ty France 1B
3. Aaron Judge RF 8 years, $300 million (.314/.420/.696/1.116)
4. Joc Pederson DH 2 years, $25 million (.266/.342/.501/.843)
5. Eugenio Suarez 3B
6. Cal Raleigh C
7. Jarred Kelenic LF
8. JP Crawford SS
9. Kolten Wong 2B 2 years, $22 million (.254/.337/.438/.775)

Bench: Dylan Moore UT, Sam Haggerty UT, Tom Murphy BC

Trade Jesse Winker and Marco Gonzales. Eat half their contracts for all I care... do whatever it takes.

Here's a random name:

Joey Meneses

It's a small blip and he's a guy who has had to go to Japan, etc...

But in 47 games with the Nats he's slashing .326/.361/.562/.923 with 10 dingers. Plays 1B and RF... maybe worth a flyer? He only signed 1-year deal w. the Nats.
Great find!

Was thinking about the discussion of second base defense and realized that most of our pitchers are striking out 1 batter an inning anyways.

K/9

Castillo: 10.67
Ray: 10.18
Gilbert: 8.61
Kirby: 9.30
Marco: 4.95

So for every 6 inning outing-

Castillo is getting 7.11 outs via strikeout (out of 18 outs)
Ray is getting 6.79 outs via strikeout
Gilbert is getting 5.74 outs via strikeout
Kirby is getting 6.2 outs via strikeout
Marco is getting 3.3 outs via strikeout

That means that every two innings the defense has to make an extra play when Marco is in the game compared to everyone else.

Add another quality strikeout pitcher in Marcos spot and you'd hardly need a defense behind them anyways and you could load up with offense-first players and hardly notice a decline in defense.
Check out the K/9 for our relievers:

As a side note: This year Tommy Edman of the Cardinals and Nico Hoerner of the Cubs rank fifth and 10th among qualified shortstops in fWAR:

Edman and Hoerner were the middle infielders for Stanford at a college game I attended in 2016:

The M's have power RH hitters JRod, Suarez, and France. The LH/switch power hitters are Cal. Maybe Kelenic if he get his act together. I'd rather save the money for a LH/switch power hitter.
Bell
Why do you like Bell? It really perplexes me. He's had a few good periods in his career, but he's really streaky. I mean he's down to .190 and a 74 ops+ w/ SD

Whereas Abreu has been hitting .280/.830+ every yr since 2019. He's a machine

Maybe trade for Nootbaar. He's hit 14 hrs in about half a season. He's an average RF, about DMo's speed but a lefty.

Yeah. The Yankees aren’t letting Judge walk. (Maybe someone can post the full text - I don’t have a subscription to The Athletic)

I could see Dipoto poaching teams with high salary like SD, or NYM for a trade looking to shed salary. Not sure the Mets would with their deep pockets, something similar to this scenario.
