If Marco is the 5th staring we are going have to endure more Polo than the entire history of the British Royal family...
Wasn't Marco laboring through something last year? I know none of our starters hit the DL, but Marco hit a rough patch at the beginning of the season. If he sucks, I think you'll see a quick flip flop of him and Flexen. But right now, I'm willing to bet that the 5th spot is Marco's just based on seniority alone.
Seniority and suck cost of Payroll owed justifying putting sticking the absolute worst option in that role over Flexen, Miller, Dollard, Hancock, Berroa et al So Mariners...

I know it is not much consolation but I am sure glad he is our number 5 starter instead of number 1 like he was for years!

I guess it could always be worse. :D :D

Seems some players at least got bumps on MLBTV making it a bit more fun to generate trades:

Gilbert got a 20 or so point bump to 72.6.
Raleigh got a 10 or point bump to 43.5.
Munoz got a MASSIVE bump by some 30 points to 54.3.
Ford gained a 10 point bump to 23.2.
Young gained a 10 point bump to 15.7.
Bryce Miller gained a 6 point bump to 11.2.

Marco Gonzales remains a hard one to project but consider his comp with Sean Manaea, whom San Francisco signed a two-year, $25 million contract with a player opt out after 2023. Gonzales and Manaea, who both turn 31 years old next month, are lefthanders who were selected out of college in the first round of the 2013 draft:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/draf ... year_round

Compare their career lines:

MG 153 G, 145 GS, 843 IP, 4.08 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 6.74 K/9. 2.35 BB/9, 100 ERA+, 9.6 fWAR, 8.6 bWAR
SM 159 G, 156 GS, 885 IP, 4.06 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 8.11 K/9, 2.34 BB/9, 100 ERA+, 12.1 fWAR, 11.5 bWAR

Neither Gonzales nor Manaea had good seasons in 2022:

MG 32 G, 32 GS, 183 IP, 4.13 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 5.07 K/9, 2.46 BB/9, 90 ERA+, 0.1 fWAR, -0.1 bWAR
SM 30 G, 28 GS, 158 IP, 4.96 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 8.89 K/9, 2.85 BB/9, 75 ERA+, 1.1 fWAR, -0.1 bWAR

The FanGraphs 2023 projections:

MG 29 G, 29 GS, 167 IP, 15.3 K%, 6.2 BB%, 4.62 ERA, 4.78 FIP, 0.5 WAR
SM 28 G, 28 GS, 156 IP, 22.1 K%, 6.7 BB%, 4.06 ERA, 3.90 FIP, 1.9 WAR

The Marcel 2023 projections:

MG 166 IP, 3.96 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 6.5 K/9, 2.5 BB/9
SM 156 IP, 4.33 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 8.8 K/9, 2.6 BB/9

Roster Resource currently lists Gonzales as the No. 5 starter with Seattle and Manaea as the No. 3 starter with San Francisco:

Prorated for innings pitched those four lefthanders are awfully close in WAR.
