I'm curious if this will be a gray area.

According to MLBTradeRumors the Mariners would give up their third pick for signing a top free agent, which under normal circumstances would be our third round pick.

Seems like the pick we gain from Julio should be exempt since its a bonus and they should instead lose their third round pick. Probably doesn't. But probably should.

In other words we shouldn't lose our second rounder instead of our third rounder just because Julio gained us a pick after the first round. That would amount to the bonus pick we got from him only moving our second pick up in the order. Doesn't seem right for some reason.
Agree 100%, which is why I'm not so sure the M's go out and get one of the Top free agent Shortstops.
An unlikely signing of Carlos Correa would not result in a loss of a draft pick because this year the shortstop was ineligible for a qualifying offer.
The M's fanbase will not endorse a cheater like Correa much less the clubhouse and its chemistry. Correa is such a bad example of who we need its not even funny.

I'm reposting in case someone didn't see the highlighted part.

Also, the M's would lose their 2nd round pick if they sign a QO free agent.

The Mariners currently have the 23rd pick in the 2023 draft but will move up one slot if the New York Mets exceed the initial competitive-balance tax threshold of $230 million by more than $40 million as projected.

https://www.mlb.com/news/2023-mlb-draft-order

From Seattle Sports 710:

https://sports.mynorthwest.com/1687751/ ... -by-peers/

That should be the 29th pick if, as expected, the first picks of the Mets and Dodgers are dropped 10 slots as CBT penalties.

Revenue Sharing Recipients: Diamondbacks, Orioles, Reds, Guardians, Rockies, Tigers, Royals, Marlins, Brewers, Twins, Athletics, Pirates, Mariners, Rays

These 14 teams received revenue sharing and did not exceed the competitive balance tax. If one of these teams signs a qualified free agent, it forfeits its third-highest pick.

Has to be our third ROUND pick. The word round was previously unnecessary because they didn't foresee this scenario. How insane is it that people are worried about spending to much when we are a revenue sharing RECIPIENT.

Teams have always got compensatory picks though

Seems like even a comp pick is different than what we're getting for Julio, which is supposed to be a bonus for letting the young player come up.

If we then lose our 2nd round pick instead of our 3rd round pick for signing a free agent.... some bonus...

What if we happened to be the first pick, it wouldn't even represent an improvement in draft position..

Has to be the third round pick... but that's not how the rules make it sound.

Agree. It would be nonsensical to have it be our second round pick.

Will only come into play with Nimmo. I don't think we sign the other 13 guys that have it.

I think Spencer Strider takes the senior circuit. 200k in 130 innings
