Given what's available on the market, this seems like the best move they could have made in terms of impact, other than Judge.

And considering the cost to get Judge, it may be the best move for the team overall (especially 8 years from now when Judge is Pujols'ing his way through the end of his $300M contract).

Swanson was our best reliever both in terms of FIP and ERA but Macko is a total nothin burger. Pitching for hitting! Love it. Keep em coming.

Seattle Times staff reporter
The Mariners on Wednesday traded for a corner outfielder that is expected too be impact an impact hitter.

The team announced that it had finalized a deal that will bring former All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernandez for reliever Erik Swanson and left-handed pitching prospect Adam Macko.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the trade.

“We began our off-season with the intent to add impact and length to our lineup,” Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a team statement. “In adding Teoscar to an already solid foundation, we feel we’ve become a far more dangerous offensive club.”

Said Mariners general manager Justin Hollander in the statement: “Teoscar has been one of the better middle of the order bats in the American League and will be an exciting addition to our lineup as we look to strengthen our team and return to the playoffs in 2023.”

Hernandez, 30, was an All-Star in 2021 and will be entering his final year of club control. He posted a .267/.316/.491 slash line with 35 doubles, 25, homers and 77 RBI in 2022.

Swanson, 29, was 3-2 with a 1.68 ERA in 57 appearances in 2022.

Macko, 21, was 0-2 with a 3.99 ERA in eight starts with Class-A Everett.

Yeah, losing Swanson hurts but they didn't want to use him in the playoffs for some reason anyways so might as well send him packing. One thing Dipoto is undoubtedly good at is finding bullpen talent.

Macko could be another Pablo Lopez/Freddy Peralta, but no denying we need offense now and this trade helped us get there.

Macko had stuff but I will be shocked if he becomes anything close to those two guys. 1.4 WHIP in A ball at almost 22 yo. Big Meh.

As long as Hernandez doesn't turn into an Adam Lind sized pumpkin I think it'll turn out well for the Mariners.

I'm surprised the BJ's traded him to the team that knocked them out of the playoffs, but I guess we'll see what happens when it's Hernandez vs. Swanson in the playoffs next season!

Hernandez seems like a potential guy that could be offered a QO after next season, so decent chance they get another Macko level player back out of it on the back end anyways.

Macko with 60Ks in 38 innings, at worst he'll be a reliever. I'll take Teoscar though. At least he hit in TMobile, unlike Correa and Gallo.
