2023 Payroll

Post by D-train » Mon Nov 21, 2022 1:07 am

We are getting close to unadjusted 2018 payroll of $168M but still have plenty of room to go higher. Inflation adjusted that is $199M. We could add another $59M and still be equal with 2018 on an adjusted basis.

Will likely shed 2 if not 3 of Marco, Flexen, Winker.

Marco: $6.75 million, Flexen: $8 million, Winker: $8.25 million...

I'll be surprised if it approaches 2016 after these moves are made.

Gotta get rid of Marco before 2024... dude is gonna be making $12 million. Oof.

Yep will need to kick dollars or prospects to move Marco.

Based on what pitchers are getting like Boyd and Eflin , I don’t think this is a true statement anymore

Chris Flexen should have some trade value. Compare the stats over the past two seasons for righthanders Jameson Taillon, Taijuan Walker and Flexen:

JT 321.2 IP, 4.08 ERA, 100 ERA+, 4.2 fWAR, 3.5 bWAR
TW 316.2 IP, 3.98 ERA, 99 ERA+, 3.9 fWAR, 3.1 bWAR
CF 317.2 IP, 3.66 ERA, 108 ERA+, 3.7 fWAR, 4.7 bWAR

The Seattle Mariners reportedly are shopping Flexen, who is two years younger than Walker and two-and-a-half years younger than Taillon. Flexen lost some luster in August when Luis Castillo bumped Flexen from the Seattle rotation. Despite the demotion Flexen matched Taillon’s 2022 bWAR of 1.3.

Many will point to Flexen’s drop in fWAR from 3.0 in 2021 to 0.7 in 2022. However, Walker has never posted an fWAR above 2.5 and Taillon has not exceeded 2.3 fWAR since 2018.

MLB Trade Rumors projects Taillon and Walker with four-year contracts in free agency, Taillon at $56 million and Walker at $52 million.

Flexen is guaranteed a 2023 salary of $8 million in what MLB Trade Rumors reports is his final year of team control (despite Flexen currently sitting on two years and 107 days of MLB service).

True, and Tyler Anderson got 3/$39M.

Even Haniger is getting rumors of 3/$45M. With the lack of talent on the market, could be a 4/$60.

Have a feeling trades for guys like Reynolds, Wong are more and more likely and maybe we're lucky if they give Conforto or Michael Brantley a shot.

More likely they just keep Winker around at this point than spend anything.

After seeing what Abreu got, the chances of any of these bats that are worth having getting much less than the 4/$80 that Kyle Schwarber got last season seems unlikely.

I wonder how serious it got with Haniger. Did they even make an offer or were the talks more of a courtesy? My sense of it is that the Mariners like him but are just as happy to see him get paid somewhere else. I could be wrong about that though.

I am sure they could fall back to Haniger but they need to have at least 1 lefty heavy hitter added to the group.

Do they really and who would that be? I think good hitters are more important than lefty/righty, though I would very much like a strong left-handed power bat as well. There just aren't that many of those guys out there. This is no doubt one of the reasons JK is getting another chance because like I've said before, if he hits for just major league average, that will come with a bunch of doubles and home runs, and even a few triples, so that could be your lefty bat right there. And if JK fails, Trammell and Marlowe get their shots.
