mlb.com seems to think he was the best hitter on the open market not named Judge:

Yeah, he's older. But he's good. I recall we signed the Boomstick to a multi-year deal when he was about Abreu's age, and that worked out well for us.

That seems like such an overpay.

Similar to when the Tigers struck early last offseason to get ahead of the market and ended up paying way too much for Javier Baez.

I guess that may be what happens now that more teams are needing a DH, but 3 years seems like a mess too.

They'll end up with production like they just got from Gurriel.

If it had to he the Astros that got a good bat, I'm just glad they had to give him a third year so we can witness his decline on another team.

Shouldn't this go in the tracker thread? Heathens starting new threads when there's a perfectly good thread to put this info in.

Just joking btw.
I appreciate your support! And Heathens is being too nice!! :)

Oh come now. It's not that bad. After all I officially started the Offseason transaction thread, but reluctantly bowed out for a better title thread. Surely there could be some leeway given. ;)

Jose Abreu has value but the reported three-year, $60 million contract is a stiff commitment to Abreu, who turns 36 in January with projected 2023 wRC+ and WAR of 127 and 2.7.

Perhaps Abreu had absolutely no interest in Seattle amid reports that the veteran was considering the Florida teams nearer to his native Cuba. It's not as if the 30 teams each entered the Abreu sweepstakes with an equal chance.
Astros have 2 off days their entire ST schedule. How many trips will he take from West Palm Beach to Cuba during ST???? This stuff is so overblown.

This is a significant deal with division rival for a target for a guy that could have helped the M's. Absolutely warrants its own thread. Rumors don't warrant new threads.

The Astros got a good deal if Jose Abreu turns out to be a Nelson Cruz-type outlier.

That's a big if.

I’ll give Jerry a pass on 1 st base. I will even give him a pass on left field if unloading Winker is impossible. We need a new SS and he will not get a pass for his bs about jp. Slide jp over and get Xb. I would love yoshida we shall see

Jose Abreu's Jekyll and Hyde results over the last two years are a prime example of how OBP does not translate to runners crossing the plate compared to what SLG (homeruns specifically) gives you.

2021:
OBP: .351
SLG: .481
R: 86
HR: 30
RBI: 117

2022:
OBP: .378
SLG: .446
R: 85
HR: 15
RBI: 75

I get that RBI are a fickle statistic, but it plays out time and again when comparing OBP players to SLG players. To put runs across the plate, you need guys driving them in.

Abreu again being a prime example. He got on base at a much better rate than he did in 2022, but nobody was there to drive him in so despite a higher OBP, he scored one less time, because OBP doesn't mean Jack S without SLG to "sweep up" after it.

He accounted for 203 runs in 2021 (Runs+RBI), but only 160 in 2022.

SLG makes a big difference.
