Even when you deduct HRs from RBIs to avoid double counting it is 86+117-30 = 173 vs. 85+75-15 = 145. Still significantly better in 2021.bpj wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 9:26 pmJose Abreu's Jekyll and Hyde results over the last two years are a prime example of how OBP does not translate to runners crossing the plate compared to what SLG (homeruns specifically) gives you.
2021:
OBP: .351
SLG: .481
R: 86
HR: 30
RBI: 117
2022:
OBP: .378
SLG: .446
R: 85
HR: 15
RBI: 75
I get that RBI are a fickle statistic, but it plays out time and again when comparing OBP players to SLG players. To put runs across the plate, you need guys driving them in.
Abreu again being a prime example. He got on base at a much better rate than he did in 2022, but nobody was there to drive him in so despite a higher OBP, he scored one less time, because OBP doesn't mean Jack S without SLG to "sweep up" after it.
He accounted for 203 runs in 2021 (Runs+RBI), but only 160 in 2022.
SLG makes a big difference.

Houston has a pretty good track record. I give them props for not ducking around and filling a need while we continue to posture.

Until we're left with Abraham Toro at 2B and need to trade for Carlos Santana at the break.
Which seemingly happens every year.

Even when you error on the side of caution, you are making an ERROR and he always seems to do that.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 11:18 pmUntil we're left with Abraham Toro at 2B and need to trade for Carlos Santana at the break.

I agree with the statement and sentiment, but I think the aphorism is to err on the side of caution. Unless your double use of error is clever wordplay...
Either way, Jerry is uncharacteristically sitting on his hands right now. I guess he's waiting for big chips to fall before making whatever offers he feels obliged to make to free agents. Or not. Who knows with Jerry.
If we're stuck with Toro at 2B because Jerry was playing a devious cat and mouse game, I think our season would be over before it began.

Ah you are correct. Reminds we when I said milktoast instead of milquetoast one time. Never made that mistake again. lolBig_Maple wrote: ↑Mon Nov 28, 2022 11:30 pmI agree with the statement and sentiment, but I think the aphorism is to err on the side of caution. Maybe Jerry never makes a value offer. He’s like the slick kid that never brings a date to the prom…and always ready to steal the girl towards the end of the dance
I don’t believe him when he says we will add or spend big he hasn’t so far

No worries. I’m certainly not the word police. I’d fail a middle school English test.

Three years at $60 mil, have to say that's right where I had him, but begun to have my doubts
