Hi Guys,
Any plans to ask Jerry or Hollander what changed to go from Jerry talking about possibly moving JP to 2B to sign one of the big 4 FAs to him talking about Free Agency like it is a Crypto Currency Ponzi scheme?
Thanks!

I think you may have misinterpreted what Jerry said about the shortstops …. https: //www. seattletimes. com/sports/mariners/mariners-analysis-looking-at-the-middle-infield-market-and-where-j-p-crawford-fits/

Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it.
I was referring to this from the end of season presser. Virtually everyone interpreted this to mean that he was going to at least check in with the big Four FA SSs and maybe he did. But now to not even be looking for a legit full time LFer is quite a massive reversal of the narrative. Its like the M’s set payroll budget in late November and it ended up being lower than Jerry anticipated?
“Our great preference would be we could land a shortstop that would like to go play second base, but we are not going to close the door to anything in that regard,” he said. “J.P. is our shortstop, he’s an emotional leader for us. We feel he does a very good job in anything we ask him to do. He was banged up at the end of the season as well, dealing with a knee issue of his own. He has a way of elevating the emotion of our team in a way that very few in our clubhouse have the ability to do. He will line up for us opening day at shortstop and our goal is to put someone around him. If we do find someone who plays shortstop, that person could very likely move to second base.

They did check in with the agents for all of them. But they were never going to give any of them 300 million when they want to go after Ohtani next season. Both Hernandez and Wong have one-year of club control.
And none of those free agents were going to move willingly unless you gave into their contract demands. They could still talk to Correa or Swanson again. But the Red Sox and Giants and Braves will give them the money they want and not ask them to move.
I mean they could still look at Benintendi or Conforto. I doubt they will go on Nimmo. And I don’t think he’s a $100 million player.

So basically, everyone they acquired this year would be temps. I'm sorry, but this strategy makes no sense to me - you give up prospects to get proven talent, and then you do it all over again the following season. Yes, I understand how "prove it" years work, and yes, I understand how it sometimes makes sense to recruit and then extend, but neither makes sense as your
entire offseason plan when you are entering your window of serious contention.
And D-Train, please also ask Divish what color the sky is in his world if he thinks the M's are seriously going to make a run at Ohtani. This is rumor-bait. The M's are metaphorically chumming the waters to get us all excited about the prospect of the M's really saving money to make a run at the best player in baseball when they know full well they will be outbid, or that they can't afford him. They know this will be the case right now.
Look, Judge in our outfield would be as good as Ohtani, and Judge would actually be cheaper, and Judge is more durable (2-way players are more likely to get injured, full stop). Ohtani is going to get stupid money that we can't pay - we weren't even willing to go toe-to-toe with the Yankees and Giants this year for Judge.

He could DH. You saying you would rather give AB's to Kelenic over a proven All-Star? Never thought I'd see the day lol

Sorry. Yeah - that wasn't directed at you as an action-item so much as it was an observation that Divish is either insanely naive, or in on the joke with the rest of management if he thinks Ohtani is a possibility next year.

I am referring to Jerry's absurd focus on getting a RH bat.

Would you prefer they don't get anyone and have JK, Marlowe and Trammell play LF and DH?

No. My preference would be either go get a stud like Nimmo from FA and sign him to a mid-ish contract (I dunno - 5 years, $85MM).
AND/OR - trade for someone with a few years on their contract (like Reynolds for COF or Arraez for 2B).
They could afford to do one of each - empty their wallets and bleed the farm, and they would get good, solid, long term upgrades.
Look - rentals are good now and then - they serve a purpose. But JD's entire offseason offensive plan has been to trade for guys who have 1 year left. Great for year one of a rebuild. Not great for year 2 of a window of contention.
